Fifth annual 3Arts Awards presented

Hypocrites artistic director Halena Kays is having a pretty good week. After being named co-curator of Theater on the Lake's 2013 season on Thursday (she'll select next summer's lakeside remounts in tandem with director Joanie Schultz), Kays was revealed today as one of the ten honorees of 3Arts' fifth annual awards.
The arts advocacy group bestows unrestricted grants of $15,000 to women artists, artists of color and artists with disabilities working in the Chicago area. In addition to Kays, this year's recipients include lighting designer Heather Gilbert; choreographers Monique Hailey and Nejla Yatkin; jazz vocalist Dee Alexander; instrumentalist and Old Town School mainstay Lanialoha Lee; visual artists Harold Mendez and Maria Vergara; and teaching artists Miguel Aguilar and Avery Young. The awards are being presented this evening in a reception at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
