Adam Blumberg, Untitled, 2011.
There are more than 130 Art & Design events happening this weekend. Check our listings for details, and read about a few openings and lectures that didn't make it into print after the jump. All are free unless otherwise noted.
Fri 13
In the West Loop, threewalls' Artist-in-Research residents Escape Group present performative talks about their evolving installation from 6:30–8:30pm. The program includes artists Sara Black, Adam Rose, and Cassandra Troyan.
Sat 14
At the Chicago Cultural Center, Project Onward hosts its "Circle of Friends" Portrait Slam from 10am–4pm. Participants in the program, which supports artists with mental and developmental disabilities, will create portraits for members of the public. Sittings take approximately 30 minutes and start at $20.
At 2pm at the Chicago Cultural Center, Shawne Major speaks about the dramatic assemblages in her new show "On a Darkling Plain."
In West Town, the Hills Esthetic Center opens "Paul Erschen: Newport Room" from 6–10pm. Erschen's installation of screen prints, several hundred archived menthol cigarette packs, and a grouping of cast-object assemblages were developed through his 2011 ACRE summer residency.
In Humboldt Park, Floor Length and Tux presents new works by Catie Olson, EC Brown, Cole Pierce, Angela Lopez and Stephen Nyktas in "FLAT 12" from 7–10pm.
Sun 15
ACRE hosts another resident's show, "Adam Blumberg: Boys' Life," at its own Pilsen gallery, ACRE Projects, 4–8pm, and Mon 16, noon–4pm. Philadelphia-based artist Blumberg's photographs, sculptures, and found and ephemeral objects reflect on personal memories and popular culture to examine perceptions of masculinity and cultural archetypes.
