Rarely seen works by artists such as Elizabeth Catlett reflect the experiences of the hundreds of thousands of people who moved to Chicago to escape persecution or poverty in the South, Eastern Europe and elsewhere during the first half of the 20th century. A revelatory section of the show explores the connections among local artists and Mexican muralists, but “They Seek a City” ends too abruptly with the New Bauhaus. Its sophisticated abstract art seems out of place, given the Social Realism that dominates the exhibition. Through Jun 2.—Franck Mercurio
