Pope's first solo exhibition at moniquemeloche opened on the summer solstice, ushering in a season in Chicago that tends to see a dramatic spike in gun violence. Wanting to make visible this too-often invisible problem, Pope collaborated with more than 400 Chicago teens, conveying their reactions to youth gun violence via various totems of high school culture, such as yearbooks, spirit sticks, cheerleading paraphernalia and varsity patches. By focusing on the violence epidemic within a gallery setting, she hopes her performance pieces and sculpture will prompt visitors to give more consideration to an issue they might not deal with on an everyday level.
