What are you e-reading?

One bummer about e-readers: You can't sneak peeks at book covers to see what people are reading. But we find that when you approach digital-ink devotees, not only are they happy to disclose what tome they're engrossed in, they'll also extol the virtues of their device of choice.

SAM NORMAN, 24, Streeterville
Spotted At O’Hare getting on the Blue Line with an iPad
“Having an iPad not only gives me access to any book any time I want to read it by downloading it, but I can read multiple books simultaneously without having to carry multiple books. I’ve read and not finished probably every single book ever. I’m a little ADD.”

KEVIN FOWLER, 36, Lincoln Square
Spotted On the Brown Line with a Sony Reader
“[The Reader] was a gift from my wife. The original reason for buying it was to eliminate the piles and piles of books I was accumulating. I only use it for reading books. My e-reader is a pretty basic model. I wanted it that way to avoid distractions from reading. The biggest advantage is that I can store my books electronically, saving tons of space in our condo. It’s also convenient to always have another book to read when you finish the current one.”

JUDY ALMDALE, Hoffman Estates
Spotted On a Union Pacific Northwest Metra train with a Kindle
“I absolutely love [my Kindle]. I bought it to go on a cruise last May and I just got hooked. Now I get my newspapers on it every morning. My newspaper was never on my porch, or it was late or wet. Now my newspaper is never on the driveway anymore because I carry it with me.”

RUSSELL COLBURN, 28, Lincoln Park
Spotted At the Armitage Brown Line stop with a Kindle
“I enjoy reading the Kindle when I am on the road. It’s lightweight, easy to manage and can store a thousand books in it, and it’s as light as a newspaper. Eventually, I will cross over 100 percent to the Kindle when I am done reading all the hardcover books I have collected at home.”

ANNELISE RAAF, 26, Lakeview
Spotted On the Brown Line with a Kindle
“I love reading books on the Kindle. I recently borrowed a paper book from a friend and it felt weird to hold it on the train. On the Kindle, you can adjust the font and turn the pages easier. I feel like I am reading books faster on the Kindle.”

JEFF DEVRIES, 35, Edgewater
Spotted On the Red Line with an iPad
“I like [the iPad]. I think the search is great and [I like] the ability to read some massive volume without lugging it around. Also, there are tons of free classics out there.”

BRIAN CIS, 27, Wicker Park
Spotted On the Blue Line with a Kindle
“I like not having massive collections of books that I have to move every year. And I like having everything I read in one place. Plus, I have a long-standing relationship with Amazon… [and] a bit of a personal grudge against Apple.”

DEON CRAYTON, 31, Rolling Meadows
Spotted On a Union Pacific Northwest Metra train with a Sony Reader
“This is the best thing I’ve ever had. I love it. A lot of people say, you know, I miss regular books. I do not. It’s just so much better—you can use it with one hand, you can advance the pages with one hand. And it’s so convenient. I don’t have to go to the bookstore when I run out of books or go to the library. And I like that I can rent library books on the Sony Reader. So I think that’s really awesome. I find that I’m reading more, probably a couple books a week; I’m just constantly reading.”
