Sports to news: ABC anchor job luring Faris to New York

Posted in Robert Feder | Chicago Media blog by Robert Feder on Oct 27, 2011 at 12:00am

Paula Faris

Losing Ginger was bad enough. Then Zoraida. And now Paula?

Paula Faris, who’s been a shining star among Chicago television sportscasters, is the latest local luminary headed for network fame and fortune in New York.

Sources said the WMAQ-Channel 5 sports anchor/reporter is expected to be named co-anchor of World News Now, the ABC overnight news show. Faris also is expected to contribute occasional reports to ABC’s Good Morning America.

Although she wouldn’t confirm details of her new job, Faris, who turned 36 on Wednesday, said she plans to work at the NBC-owned station through the end of her contract in December before starting what she called a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” in early January.

“Never in a million years did my husband and I envision leaving Chicago after arriving here over six years ago,” Faris told me. “We’re born and bred Midwesterners, but have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity outside the city. We have mixed emotions because of our strong feelings for this amazing city and the deep relationships we’ve cultivated. But until my final day on the air at NBC 5, I promise to tell the untold stories and do my job to the very best of my ability.”

Faris is the third exceedingly telegenic personality at NBC 5 to accept a network plum in New York in recent weeks. As first tipped here, former weekend meteorologist Ginger Zee is joining ABC’s Good Morning America Weekend in a similar role next month, and NBC 5 News Today anchor Zoraida Sambolin is headed for CNN to anchor one of the planned replacement programs for American Morning.

NBC 5 bosses declined to comment on the move by Faris or on plans to replace her. Her departure marks the second loss this year of a key figure on the station’s sports staff. Sports anchor Daryl Hawks died suddenly last May while in Atlanta to cover a Bulls playoff game. Remaining full-timers are Mike Adamle and Peggy Kusinski.

At World News Now, Faris is expected to co-anchor alongside Rob Nelson. The position she’ll be taking has been vacant since Vinita Nair left the program last February. Peggy Bunker had been filling in temporarily until July, when ABC began rotating anchors while seeking a permanent replacement.

A native of Jackson, Michigan, and graduate of Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, Faris worked at stations in Dayton and Cincinnati before joining NBC 5 in November 2005. She and husband John Krueger, whom she met in college, have two children.

As much as she knows she’ll miss Chicago, Faris said one thing she’s most excited about is getting to enjoy sports just for the fun of it. “I can be a fan again!” she said. “I’ll have Sundays off. I can go to games. And that’s what I’m really looking forward to — kind of taking those critic blinders off and remembering what it’s like to be a fan and why I fell in love with sports.”

I always thought she was rather smug and annoying. The most condescending element of her screen presence was her insistence on referring to a single member of the White Sox as a White Sock. I grew up in Woodlawn, Englewood, Longwood and Evergreen. No one in any of those communities ever used that expresssion, nlor would we let anyone get away with that. In fairness, Mark Giangreco says that, as well, and it's just as awful.

NBC5 would be better off letting the people at Comcast SportsNet handle their sports coverage. I agree that Wolf needs to go. Now would be the perfect time to make that happen.

This sucks. Can't NBC-5 find any hot but crazy women who Chicago will put up with, but NYC won't touch with a ten foot pole?
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 2:32 am
Huge congrats and best wishes to Paula!

By wb (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 7:42 am
Rob - I usually agree 100 percent with your impressions but with Ms. Faris I gotta take a pass. That stupid grin and giggling that accompanied cliche-ridden reports and "homer" interviews were too much.

don't care for NBC anyways for all i care they can all move to New York.Thank God For the best news station in town ABC.

Paula was a sports reporter in Cincinnati, and me living in that area I was heartbroken when she left WCPO for Chicago.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 8:08 am
Ginger Zee - I get it. Network show. Great opportunity. Zoraida - Kinda get it but CNN is not the CNN we remember. Ratings in the tank and this show she's going to has been a dumping ground. No chance against all of the morning competition. I'd bet $100 she'll be back in Chicago within 5 years. Paula Faris - Don't get it at all! She says the overnight ABC news is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?? Sure it's a network but leaving the cozy spot here in Chicago with 2 kids - makes no sense. No way the cash is that big. Good luck with those working hours. Don't be surprised to see both Zoraida and Paula back in Chicago within 5 years. Zoraida is the lock of the year on that one. PS - Lauren Jiggets needs some major schooling on the teleprompter. Very stiff. Beware.

Going to miss Paula. I hope this doesn't lead to more Bruce Wolf. I change the channel as soon as I hear his name. Dump Wolf and give Lawrence Holmes a chance.

Alright, New York. Have at 'em. But you guys lay a finger on Jan Jeffcoat and there's gonna be trouble.
By John (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 9:18 am
Lots of talk about "why would Paula leave" but is the writing on the wall at NBC-5 with the sports department after the Comcast merger?
By Illini (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 9:35 am
Now if they can just get rid of Peggy Kuzinski, who without a doubt has to be the absolute worst sports reporter in Chicago. Horrible interviewer. Absolutely embarrassing to watch when she goes unscripted. Just a complete joke. How Peggy Kuzinski landed a television gig in such a large market is beyond me.

Time to get Sarah Kustok...I need happy hot women delivering sports please.
By Jimmy (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 10:10 am
I like Sarah too. The only thing is when her dads trail comes up, how much time is she going to be in court?
By Jim (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 10:23 am
There's nothing wrong with liking hard-hitting Journalism and also liking eye-candy. It wasn't so long ago that 5 was the station with the all-fox (lower case) lineup: Anna Davlantes, Ginger Zee, Paula Faris and Lauren Jiggetts on the same newscast was the local tv news equivalent of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. Hubba hubba. IMHO, Paula Faris has the most magnetic eyes in television. Beware, overnight ABC viewers: you're going to lose more sleep.
By spyguy (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 10:32 am
I agree. Wolf lacks gravitas. In fact, he hardly seems there.
By lise dominatrix (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 10:33 am
I enjoyed the Paula Faris era. Like Ginger Zee, Robin Meade, and I'm sure soo enough for Lauren Jiggets, we were lucky to have her. Unfortunately it's time to pop open another can of newsbabe. Sarah Kustok, you're on deck!
By Joe Car (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 11:16 am
Whoa, MediaHound - Peggy is one of the few who do the grunt work day in and day out and don't just show up to read a script or go out to substitute for a mike stand with hanging curves or franchise approved questions.
By Stormy (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 11:57 am
Lauren Jiggetts must have a fine mama!!!
By urbanleftbehind (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 11:58 am
The weekend weather girl is Cheryl Scott, and even in hi-def she looks smashing. Look for her star to rise. Sarah Kustok could definitely be a replacement on sports, but has anybody noticed that she's become quite the 'close talker' on the Blackhawks' intermission & post-game? She was interviewing Michael Frolik the other night & she was about 2 inches away from him--he actually looked scared!

Just like with Ginger Zee & Zoraida Sambolin, Chicago's loss will be America's gain with news of Paula Faris leaving. Considering the fact that Comcast SportsNet is now part of the NBC Universal corporate umbrella, I wonder if Paula leaving means that NBC5 will utilize the CSN resources and that the likes of Chris Boden, Luke Stuckmeyer, Kip Lewis and other sports anchors/reporters who work at the regional sports network will add NBC5 duties. Will "Sports Sunday" contributor, 670 The SCORE's Laurence Holmes, be adding more work at the NBCU-owned outlet and possibly doing less work at WSCR? At this stage, all bets are off.
By Andy B (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 3:03 pm
We don't need the terrible Laurence Holmes a/k/a the race-card player. He's Steve Urkel!
By Steve Urkel (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 4:20 pm
Good Luck Paula and I know you will be back in chicago in a few years. I will say Peggy Kusinski, Jeff Goldblatt, and Christian Farr should leave all 3 of them suck.

Dan: Wolf appears all that's left. Anonymous 2:32 a.m.: Or black sportscaster that won't die at 38? BTW, this showed up almost word for word on the Tribune Breaking Business News site, dated 10/27 3:30 p.m. Since this post was dated and appears older than that, I guess we can guess where the Tribune got its. FEDER RESPONDS: Thanks for noticing that!

NBC5 Chicago, take the lead and merge with CSN Chicago as soon as Paula leaves. This way, come February Sweeps, you'll be up to speed and see if you, along with Sarah can make a dent on the ABC7 Chicago Juggernaught.

Paula will be missed in Chicago. She had the "Big 3": Smoking Hot, Knowledgeable about sports, and a great on air presence!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 10/27/2011 at 10:25 pm
Alright, New York. Have at 'em. But you guys lay a finger on Jan Jeffcoat and there's gonna be trouble. You got that right ace! I said to myself... who the H is Jan Jeffcoat? I don't get out much... and live a sheltered life! My God do I know who she is now... As Al McGuire use to say... Holy Mackerel!!!

Can't wait to see Paula Faris alongside Rob Nelson at ABC World News Now, "Where more insomniacs get their news." Make sure you get your dancing shoes ready, Paula, so you can do the "World News Polka" every early Friday.. :-D

Good luck Paula, the overnight shift is brutal, but it's perfect for young moms. If you're single that's another story, it kills your social life. I hope she enjoys it and I wish her much success. Go Paula!
By Overnighter (not verified) on 10/28/2011 at 6:44 am
I worked with Paula here in Cincinnati--she's a great person and a pro at her job. We still miss her here and I'm sure Chicago will miss her as well. Best of luch in New York Paula!

"Losing Ginger was bad enough. Then Zoraida..." How bad was losing Ginger, really? I admit I'm a fan, and I feel the pain of loss, but that has more to do with my wish to wake up with an attractive woman telling me what kind of Saturday I should expect, than it does with losing someone with serious journalism chops. Chicago will be just fine without her (and the flaky Zoraida Sambolin, for that matter); I imagine the folks at NBC will do what they usually do - have everyone take one step over to maintain a sense of continuity, lest their precious ratings waver even just a tad. Fact is, this is a great move for Zee, whose breezy (pun intended) personality was completely overlooked in the weekend spot at WMAQ. What those boneheads should have done is retired the stiff, cheesy, alliteration-loving Andy Avalos, and replaced him with Zee - if only they'd been able to keep her in town. As for Bruce Wolf, I couldn't agree more; I think of him as the "Svenghouli" of sports - too much of a canned ham for my taste.
By Len (not verified) on 10/31/2011 at 1:26 pm
Dear Len, You get no kick out of "ding dong dilly of a dinger"? Or my assertion that I took the SAT for Derrick Rose and I would do it again? Because other sportscasters just talk sports; I take risks for the Chicago fan. I am saddened.
By bruce wolf (not verified) on 10/31/2011 at 7:11 pm
Hey Bruce, watch it with the sex talk and double-entendres. This is a "family" blog!
By ChiTownGal (not verified) on 11/01/2011 at 3:23 pm
Hey, ChiTownGal, speaking of Derrick Rose, he just got nominated for Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, which goes to the athlete who's really good at sports and who also demonstrates character. Now since I took the SAT for him, how does that demonstrate his character? And do you think of any of the tv sportscasters in this town reported on the, er, incongruity of Rose getting nominated for the award? Nah. Best to leave the truth in the safe precinct of the bottom of an old Feder blog.

@MediaHound: Sorry to say this, but you're wrong about Peggy Kuzinski. I've had the pleasure to work with her, and I can tell you honestly that she is one of the most hard working, knowledgeable, personable, and approachable sports reporters/anchors in the Chicagoland market today. She can be incredibly funny (remember CLTV's Sports Page when Phil MacKracken called in?), and has had experience not only here in Chicago (CLTV, Kevin Matthews Show, etc) but also as a producer with ESPN. NBC would actually be better off if they were to give Peggy more time on the air.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 11/08/2011 at 7:42 am
Please dont replace her with that Bears shill, Laurence Holmes. That guy wouldnt tell the truth about the Bears if you paid him double. I've about had it with these homers like Holmes--they're too worried about making friends where they work instead of calling things as they are, especially if it means naming names. That ME show he used to do sums it up about him--its all about him first. Those back and forth eyes thing he does while listening or interviewing is a sign to the talker to "hurry up so I can talk now"...Please, keep Holmes where he belongs in a shill role on the radio.

Laurence Hil es is the worst sportscaster, even worse than Mike Adamle. I cannot stand him and more often than not, switch channels during the Sunday night sports show. Get rid of them both.
