Brandmeier’s TV playhouse deals in laughs

Jonathon Brandmeier

Robservations on the media beat:

  • Jonathon Brandmeier is on a roll with his freewheeling weekly variety/talk show on NBC 5. This week’s special guest is Governor Pat Quinn, who agrees to play one hand of five-card draw with Johnny B. for casino rights in Chicago. (Guess who wins?) “The mighty Quinn is the real deal,” Brandmeier told me. “I convinced him to start putting his name on projects and Chicago landmarks like Rahm [Emanuel] does. Thus the Chicago River will now be called ‘Quinn Creek.’ Bottom line: I think that viewers will see the governor having fun. I did.” Brandmeier airs at 1:05am Friday night/Saturday morning  — following Last Call With Carson Daly. It also airs eight times during the week on the NBC Chicago NonStop digital channel. The former Chicago radio superstar calls the limited-run series “a work in progress for all involved.”
  • It’s official: Bill White is now director of programming and news at WGN-AM (720). Hired as program director of the Tribune Co.-owned news/talk station last February, White had been overseeing the news department on an interim basis since news director Charlie Meyerson left in June. On Wednesday, White confirmed his dual role as permanent. “I’ve done this previously and it’s working well to provide more continuity between our shows and the news of the day,” he told me. In a change of heart (so to speak), White won’t be hiring a replacement for former anchor/reporter Rob Hart, who joined Meyerson at Merlin Media all-news WWWN-FM (101.1)  “We’re reconfiguring our news operation and moving others into roles with greater responsibility, so we aren’t planning to fill the reporter position per se, as we are at a full complement of news anchors who also report,” he said.
  • Tisha Lewis, the rookie Fox Chicago reporter who seems out of her depth on just about every story she covers, isn’t doing much to endear herself to colleagues.  Last week she violated provisions of two union contracts, sources said, when she spent the night with Occupy Chicago and shot the entire story herself with her iPhone camera. “The station wasn’t willing to send a union cameraman undercover with her,” one staffer told me. “But they did hire an armed escort to tag along and guard her.” Fox bosses are pushing for “backpack journalists” to be exempted by union contracts.
  • Chicago Tribune home delivery subscribers are being hit with whopping new bills to cover the editorial enhancements the paper introduced last June. On Tuesday one reader’s invoice jumped from $34.45 for 13 weeks of delivery to $97.50 for the same period. When she called to cancel, she said she was offered a “discount rate” of $52.50. In other news, Tribune weekday circulation dropped in the latest six-month report by the Audit Bureau of Circulation.
  • Crain’s Chicago Business has revamped its blog network with a sharp (and long overdue) makeover and the addition of reporter Brigid Sweeney covering the retail, convention, nonprofit and foundation beats. Sweeney’s new blog joins first-rate personality columnist Shia Kapos, along with Greg Hinz on politics, Ed Sherman on sports, and Ann Dwyer on entrepreneurs.
  • Ray Hanania, the veteran Chicago journalist, broadcaster, publicist and provocateur, returns to radio this weekend from 8 to 11am Sundays on time-brokered WSBC-AM (1240). Early this year he cited health reasons for dropping his weekday morning talk show on WJJG-AM (1530). His new show, he said, will cover politics “local, national and my favorite — international.”

Love Johnny, but he is so much better on the radio.

Brandmeier -- overrated and unfunny, but always manages to attract sycophants who inexplicably think he's the cat's meow. I don't get it, but good for him if he can still make a career out of whatever it is he does.

Good to see that Johnny is still "Just Havin' Fun." Now, if only we could get him back on the radio...

I continue to watch but cringe at the many mistakes.. timing issues... awkward interviews where the other person is prematurely cut off ... it certainly is like watching a work in progress - but more reminds me of something that would be shown only on college campus TV... they shouldn't have rushed this on the air and got the kinks out.

Thanks for the heads up, so I won't be watching BRANDMEIER on his 9 appearances this week. I don't need to watch some self-serving clown, nor Brandmeier. Also, the whopping new bills seem to indicate that the Tribune is using the same technique as the Chicago Skyway to get out of bankruptcy--triple rates. However, it doesn't appear that the Tribune has a casino at the end of it to obtain patronage. Heck, with guys like Zorn and Byrne, there not even is a reason to click on their website. At some point, not even the bankruptcy trustee will want to be associated with it.

I wonder how much they are paying Johnny B for a throwaway show like this? If it is more than 100 bucks, they are paying way to much..

I agree the show is a work in progress but it is making strides and getting better every week.

This show is absolutely lame! He is doing the same old cornball schtick he did 20 years ago. UNFUNNY

Bill White cracks me up. "We aren’t planning to fill the reporter position per se..." Oh please. How many different ways can one say, "We're cheap and getting worse?" WGN has fallen to rip 'n read status. Their motto should be: "When News Happens...It's News To Us." Or, even better, "If It's Not in The Tribune, We Don't Have a Clue." If what White means by "anchors who also report" is that they re-write wire or newspaper copy, then yes, he's correct. Thanks, but when I want to know what's happening in Chicago, I'll listen to WBBM.

I've always been a Johnny B. fan and still am, but oh Johnny - whatever shade your hair is these days ain't working. And the mid-60s Beatles look (mop top hair, black suit and skinny tie)doesn't work for you either - just look your age & we'll all be fine with it. And if your hair isn't dyed, then there really was something funky in the water in Fond du Lac!

How did Johnny B. get such a prime time slot for his show? That prime 1:05 AM slot must have several infomercial producers green with envy.

Agree with overrated and unfunny...and that was when he was in his prime! Keep him and Bruce Wolf out of sight, out of mind....

Goodbye Tribune! I just received my bill today and they are no longer getting my money. As it stands, I will still subscribe to the SunTimes until they raise their subscription price and when they do-it will be all internet news!

I agree Brandmeier's true talent is live radio and creative use of audio. But he is also a wonderful interviewer. His interviewing skills do not change, whether he is talking to a mega-celebrity or a regular person. I personally want him back on live radio, but in the meantime I'm enjoying his TV project...via DVR. To the JB haters (which by definition usually means fans of Mancrow Miller): Eat Me

I think Feder is giving more publicity to Brandmeier's show than NBC is. As for Tisha Lewis, she's endearing herself to Fox management. She'll be on Fox News in no time.

Dear Bill White, Your morning show is the pits. Greg Jarrett is the worse host I've ever heard. Jim Gudas & Mary V. fall under the same catergory. Maybe you have too much to do and don't have a chance to listen to the radio.

God, help the news staff of WGN radio, they will need it. Bill White is the pits to work for, period. He thinks he's God and has little regard for staff and when criticizing them directly, doesn't look them in the eye.

It is lost hope to wish for Johnny B to go back to terrestial radio. He's considered himself a live entertainer since his days with his brothers at the Fon Du Lac Holiday Inn, and has been pushing to make TV work since the early '90s both in Chicago and in L.A. Industry conditions have just made it easy for him to pursue it without any other obligations pressuring him. Radio is something he happened to fall into because his ability to entertain translated. He is a skilled interviewer as squirehogg says, with the ability to get public figures to show sides of themselves that they don't normally reveal. It could be a good or bad side, and the wait to see what comes out is what makes it so dang engaging. If he and his team can smooth out the logistics for TV the way they did for radio, he'll be fine.

Love Johnny b. Would love more shows and another radio gig

WGN Radio should change its' name to WTELL, because all they ever do is tell - tell, tell, tell, tell, tell. They'll tell you what they mean to the community. They'll tell you what they mean to radio history. They'll tell you, "what's coming up...". They'll tell you they're the home for this, the home for that, the home for blah-blah-blah-blah-blah. On its' air, WGN promotes itself more than it promotes its' sponsors/advertisers; fools call all of that "branding", but it's called "tell". No one needs disruptive-redundant "news"-traffic-weather updates! WGN Radio, Show; Don't Tell. Any newcomer to the Chicago airwaves could dominate if they had the guts & brains to be different!

I'm not sure who's funnier, Brandmeier or Hanania. We expect Johnny to provide yucks but Ray's role with Cicero as spokesperson leads to some really hysterical positions with quotes worth their weight in Italian beef sandwiches.
By Crustywalt (not verified) on 11/07/2011 at 10:28 am
Bill White has done nothing but made it worse for WGN radio. It is absolutely terrible, worse every minute. He was supposed to change and make it better. He has done nothing. New hosts should be hired and people like Steve and Johnny should have been out a long time ago. They are awful and still they are on? Hired for director of programming and news? He should be out for doing nothing, period.

Good to see Johnny B back in Chicago. I watched his talk show on NBC this morning and thought it was great. I plan on watching every week. Now all we need if for Steve Dahl & Kevin Matthews to get back on the air in Chicago. Forget about the podcast, Steve. One tip for Johnny B .... do something about the hair, JB. It looks like a toupee up there.
