Brandmeier on WGN: ‘This is the perfect home for me’

Posted in Chicago Media blog by Robert Feder on Dec 5, 2011 at 12:00am

Jonathon Brandmeier

Will Johnny B. change WGN — or will WGN change Johnny B.?

On that question hinges the future of the Chicago Tribune’s 87-year-old radio flagship and millions of dollars in advertising revenue. Ready or not, after a courtship that began more than 20 years ago in a secret meeting at the Fairmont Hotel, Jonathon Brandmeier and news/talk WGN-AM (720) finally consummated the deal that few believed would ever get done.

When he steps into the Michigan Avenue showcase studio and cracks open the microphone Friday, the 55-year-old Chicago radio icon and pride of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, will become WGN’s fourth morning personality in three years, following Greg Jarrett (who was fired), John Williams (who moved to middays) and Spike O’Dell (who retired).

But in substance and spirit, Johnny B. has more in common with their two predecessors — the late Radio Hall of Famers Wally Phillips and Bob Collins, whose immense talents and double-digit audience shares defined WGN and dominated morning radio in Chicago for decades. Both no doubt would be proud to share their mantle with Brandmeier.

“This is the perfect home for me,” he says on the eve of his 5:30-to-9am weekday show’s debut. “It was one of the first things in my life that I didn’t have to overthink.”

Unlike the lengthy and meticulous preparations that preceded his earlier jobs — including two stints at the Loop and one at the former WCKG — this time Johnny B. is hanging loose. As of Sunday, he still hadn’t signed his contract. He still hadn’t met everyone he’ll be working with (although he did manage to bring back his old audio producer, Hector Soriano). And he still hadn’t settled on a million other details. But none of that seems to faze him. “All I’m focused on is the product — talking into the mic and taking calls and getting a kick out of it,” he says. “Sometimes you just have to strip it down so you can get back to where you were. That’s how I started, and that’s what I do.”

Such is the urgency to set things straight at WGN after years of decline and decay that his new bosses insisted Brandmeier start at once and work it out on the fly. “When you’re talking about an opportunity like this, if you waver on it, they will move on you. They’re not fooling around. They have a business. They’re not going to wait around.”

Even as they hustled Jarrett and morning show producer Jim Wiser out the door, WGN bosses refused to confirm another major realignment — the ouster of husband-and-wife overnight hosts Steve King and Johnnie Putman after more than 26 years. Preferring to let Steve & Johnnie announce their departure on the air, the station stonewalled inquiries on the promotion of Bill Leff, who takes over from midnight to 5:30am weekdays on December 12. ("We're more than OK with the way things have worked out," King said, kicking off a week of farewell shows Monday.)

WGN general manager Tom Langmyer and program director Bill White basked in Brandmeier’s hiring last week, but credit for the deal belongs to Sean Compton, president of programming for parent company Tribune Broadcasting. Working with Brandmeier’s attorney, Scott Zolke, who also happens to be a longtime friend of Compton’s, he hammered out the two-year agreement and personally shepherded it through the bureaucratic maze of the bankruptcy-gripped Tribune Co.

When Compton called Brandmeier about the job on September 26, it was hardly the first time he’d been approached by an emissary of WGN. As far back as 1990, he’d met secretly in a suite at the Fairmont Hotel with general manager Dan Fabian and program director Lorna Gladstone, who offered him virtually a blank check to join WGN. And as recently as last year, serious talks ensued with program director Kevin Metheny under the regime of former Tribune Co. CEO Randy Michaels. But nothing ever materialized.

So when Compton reached out this time, Brandmeier naturally was skeptical: “I said with all due respect, I’d heard it all before. I’ll believe it when I see it. I was like Hyman Roth in The Godfather: ‘I’m going to go take a nap. When I wake up, if there’s money on the table, I know we have a deal. If not, I go forward.’ And he said OK, let’s go. Let’s do it. And he made it all happen — boom, boom, boom.”

The deal they made covers only radio, although Brandmeier is eager to pursue television, too. Brandmeier, his freewheeling weekly variety/talk show on NBC 5 and the NBC Chicago NonStop digital channel, concludes December 16, and he’s in talks with station president Larry Wert on a renewal. But Brandmeier says he’d also be “wide open” to a deal on the WGN America superstation or elsewhere. “I’m definitely not going to choose to do just radio. Definitely not.”

At WGN, Brandmeier inherits a daypart that currently ranks 16th among listeners in the money demo (between the ages of 25 and 54) with a 2.6 percent share, according to Arbitron. Though higher than the station's overall standing in 22nd place with a 2.1 share, it's a long way from the top ratings Johnny B. enjoyed in his heyday at the Loop.

In a candid conversation Sunday, Brandmeier shared his hopes and expectations for the new morning show:

Q. Can you describe what it will be like?

A. It’s the Today show on the radio. Just think of it that way. There’s Matt Lauer interviewing somebody who killed Moammar Gadhafi and next thing you know he’s outside of the studio in a Halloween costume. That’s how I envision the radio show.

Q. Will you be expected to maintain the rigid format with traffic every 10 minutes and all that?

A. No, they’re going to free it up a lot more. My understanding is there’ll be three breaks [an hour]. And that’s it. What Sean [Compton] said to me, which really convinced me that they were serious, was that you’re going to be the catalyst that changes the station. That sounds arrogant, but he said, if we put you into place, and we have Garry [Meier] in the afternoon, then we start to loosen it up. That’s the understanding. We’ll see. If it doesn’t turn out that way, there should be some interesting listening.

Q. Do you feel capable of handling serious, breaking news when it happens?

A. Absolutely, positively. I just absolutely can do it. I always consider myself a journalist. Ron Magers used to say, “Brandmeier will take a story and peck it apart like a chicken until he gets every feather off of it.” I feel like that’s what I do. They’ll have me and the great resources of the Tribune Company. These guys know what they’re talking about. Believe me, I know what I’m doing.

Q. But can you do it the WGN way?

A. I don’t look at it as WGN. I look at it as this is who I am, wherever I am. I have great respect for the call letters, but I am what I am. You’re always going to hear the essence of me. You can’t hide it, mask it or format it. The essence of me is about fun. Curious, opinionated fun. I don’t take life too seriously.

Q. Tell the truth. Is there anything you’re nervous about?

A. No, except my equipment. I’m excited like crazy. I’m like a child. I just want to go to work. I saw the showcase studio and I was like a 5-year-old, just looking around. When I walked into that room, it was the same feeling I had when I saw KFIZ in Fond du Lac: “Look at the mics over here! This is unbelievable!”

Q. Think you’ll be able to get along with everyone there?

A. You’re talking to a guy who’s worked with every one of those guys. I’ve been through every incarnation of personalities you can imagine. It doesn’t faze me. I just go to work.

Q. How will you measure your success?

A. I don’t know. Somebody’s going to tell me like always. I just know. I know in my head. Because if I get off the air and I had fun, that’s it. . . . I always tell my staff, “Let’s find some meat. Let’s put some meat in the cooler. Meat.”

Q. Anything else we should know?

A. When people are driving around, if they’re talking about Jay Cutler and his thumb, or they’re talking about his wedding, or the city blows up, I want them to know they can turn in to me on ’GN, and they’re gonna get it. But they’re also gonna get an opinion. That’s the beauty of it. They don’t just have to listen to the news, they can call right in, throw their opinions in. I love that! 591-7200. Oh, man, that’s awesome. Who doesn’t know that phone number?

I used to work for Johnny. I used to work for WGN. I used to work for Lorna. I got engaged on 1/1/11 at the Fairmont. Johnny was at my wedding on my birthday this year. My new wife keeps telling me to call Johnny unless he calls me first, that it's written in the stars. I tell her she doesn't know radio.

Wow, we must all be getting old. I figure you only listen to WGN when you're about ready to die.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 12:16 am
This is great news! Johnny is now going to breath new life into WGN and it will not become the powerhouse it once was. Steve Dahl is crazy thinking podcasting is going to be the new model for radio. No sense paying for something I can get free over the airwaves!

Well I'm glad to hear that management at WGN will FINALLY loosen up that unlistenable AM format, Because quite frankly the old way sucked. And kudos for waking up the overnights. Gluten guy and Perky had their time but, Things get stale after you've heard them for the thousandth time!

I am just thrilled that I can turn on WGN and NOT hear Jarrett. He was horrible, arrogant & nasty. I have the emails to prove it. So what if he just bought a house here. There are worse fates than that. He has plenty of money, no need to feel sorry for him. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out, Greg.

I was thinking the same thing as previous poster DaveG. This is really bad news for Steve Dahl and his theory that Pay to Listen Podcasting is the WAVE OF THE FUTURE. Friday was suppose to be a big day for Dahl because Kevin Matthews was doing his inaugural Dahlcast but everyone completely forgot about it because of a Robert Feder tweet breaking the news that Brandmeier was becoming the new morning personality at WGN! Radio is BACK BABY!

Congrats to Johnnie B! I will now listen to WGN more than just a bit at night with Nick and in afternoons with Gary! I hope the old audience at one of the biggest radio stations in the world gives you a chance---you are a staple here in Chi-town man! I hope you will be able to take time to be interviewed on my Friday night show 9-11 pm on SLAM Radio www.slaminternetradio.com soon if possible!

Wait a minute..."I always consider myself a journalist"? This has to be one of the worst fits in Chicago radio history. How stupid does he think the listeners are? This clown has a history of having zero respect for his listeners, and of using anybody for a source of his snickering little "bits", including his own family members, syncophants, callers, producers, and news readers. Hard to imagine Brandmeier "just having fun" as he says he sees this job, when he's bouncing off the walls playing commercials for 45 minutes out of the hour, then traffic, then weather, then the news...repeat every hour for five days a week. This from a basically phony and dishonest radio host who broadcast from Los Angeles and pretended to be in Chicago. Somebody made a multimillion dollar mistake here again!

Welcome back, John. How's Pirhana-Man from Pakistan and his wheel of meat? Play some BoDeans for me! P.S. Not sure why Steve & Johnnie are leaving---not retiring, been thinking about this for 1 year; is this a kinder & gentler "force out"? P.SS...WGN, pls. to give to Nick some extra hours or an entire shift. Plz. Thx.

Robert, I knew you would not let us down. You were right on target with your scoop, all the doubters on this blog should just blog somewhere else; they had no faith. I am thrilled that S & J were let go; they have been on the airwaves way way too long; this should have been done a long time ago. They are having a Final Week celebration, Ugh. Just get off the air, already. As for Johnny B, let's just see what happens.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:50 am
Just heard about Steve and Johnny leaving. They criticized (no names though)on the air some people letting it out of the bag. Come on, there were many many times that they scooped info ahead of times and laughed about it. I too am glad they are out. Anything would be better than these two.
By Peter (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:57 am
Hate Jarret, love the hyper rooster! Glad to have him back. S&J are BORING self absorbed name droppers, but still better than the other crap that's been out there. Bill Leff will be a refreshing change.
By Jim (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 2:08 am
I see WGN is continuing their practice of dragging tired acts out of retirement. Johnny B? Really? Yawn. However, it's nice to see that S&J are finally being shown the door. They've been unlistenable for years now. I'm not going to miss Steve. Talking. Super. Slowly. To. Make. A. Point. And. Trea. Ting. Me. Like. I'm. A. Moron.

Short run bad move, long run, might be ok in a bid to open up the station a bit. Don't know. They are going to lose the older folks they have kept over the last couple of years. It will be interesting to watch.

WGN is an elephant graveyard, where Chicago radio stars go to die. But good luck Johnny, I'm sure my 80-year-old aunt will be listening.

I cannot believe Sean Compton did something right. The guy is one of the worst at Trib Co. He doesn't know sh*t about TV and taking two years to get Johnny B in the door shows he probably doesnt know much about radio either. How does he still have a job? All the losers that hired him are all fired.

This is great news! I can't wait to hear Johnny B again. Also love the additionf Bill Leff. Good job WGN!

Glad to see the yawnsome twosome going from the all-nighter. Self absorbed is not even strong enough to describe these two. They played a game of let's pretend on the air this AM, making it sound like it's their idea. Let's bring back replays of Franklin "the Meister Brau Man" McCormick. Let's get rid of Nick D the station drama queen.
By curbstonecutup (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 6:33 am
Long, long ago - when the air was clean and sex was dirty, hey-good-morning - WGN-AM had the confidence and muscle to gradually nurture its next wave of front-line talent. Bob Collins was Exhibit "W." While Wally Phillips retained a staggering dominance in mornings, stations bosses like Dan Fabian and Wayne Vreisman carefully groomed Mr. Collins as the probable replacement for the a.m. throne. And Collins never stumbled at any step along the way - primarily weekends and afternoons. In the fog that has enveloped the station - slowly starting in the mid-1990's and significantly accelerating after Collins' sudden death - WGN-AM lost that confidence for reasons too complex to detail here. It reached its nadir during the cartoonish era of Michaels and Metheny. Now it remains scrambling to recover. What Tom Langmeyer and associates can't lose sight of is the fact WGN-AM never sold "hipness" to its faithful listeners, it sold "comfort." The hip were left to chase young Dahl and young Brandmeier on FM. And isn't it odd that no comparable radio phenom has emerged in a market and a city purportedly as hip and vital as Chicago in the past 20 years? Brandmeier alone will bump the WGN-AM morning franchise only slightly. Brandmeier amid a properly contemporary - yet "comforting" - cast of mirth-makers could pull the station out of its current horse latitudes. He walks a fine line. The hyper-energized Johnny B of Poplar Creek days no longer exists and would frighten too many WGN traditionalists anyway. The mature "journalist" (aw c'mon Johnny, think before you make a statement like that) would let down too many of his old faithfuls and confuse too many of those retained during the thoroughly disastrous run of Greg Jarrett. What Langmeyer and croupiers need more than ever to make the newest incarnation of Brandmeier work is a sharp imagineer behind the curtains who understands where the talent and the station has been, where it has to go and can design how it can get there. Keenest Chicago media watchers could identifiy at least one likely candidate, but you'd have research back to the prime-time of Dahl to find him. And then the question is could WGN management afford him? All in all, an interesting hire but one that comes with no guarantees --- other than its symbolic value as a reminder that even leisure suits look at sixty one day. Or at least 720-AM.

Johnny B is older than me and I'm (to borrow a phrase from a Negro League ballplayer and a good friend), "Two years older than Santa Clause." So no wonder he's happy to be at 'GN. He and his audience will fit perfectly. The question is, will advertisers, and if so, for how long?

Couldn't agree more with Mr. Guzman. Until proven otherwise, Johnny B., like Garry Meier, is a band-aid for a bleeding septugenarian. And what about poor Bruce Wolf? His Jack Benny is back in a great spot and he's stuck babysitting a bunch of Grade-Z "political" know-nothings in a Niagara Spray Starch time slot. Bruce deserves better! Maybe pair him with Johnny Putnam and Roma Wade at the Northbrook Sybaris. Ancient Chinese secret.

dc4580, those who listened to Johnny B. on the Loop in the 1980's ARE the older folks! Makes me think about when the late Bob Collins talked over the air about his early days of working afternoon drive at WGN, and some of the Old Guard talent (he specifically noted the late Carl Greyson) didn't like the way he was shaking up the afternoons with all his bits (playing bad music, the phone-in "Don't call us, we'll call you" talent show, ribbing weatherman Tom Skilling, Bob's unique cackling laugh, etc.). Bob developed into a great air personality and interviewer. I see a parallel between this and the hiring of Johnny B. to WGN. Here's hoping it will be a great fit!

WGN has money. The Cubs, the Blackhawks...there are dollars there, kids. Being able to afford JB won't be a problem. Going to have fix the AM radio in my car. I look forward to this. I seriously haven't listened to radio in over 10 years. We all look to have consistency in our life and sadly, we do get older. But, a great relationship can never be replaced. Admit you're older, get over it. Listen or don't don't listen. I'll be there.

Most traffic reports are a waste of time. When things are normal just say so. Who cares whether it's 20 minutes or 27 minutes on the Ryan downtown? OK, people might care, but it's not going to change what anybody does. Just report the big problems. Bill Leff is great. Can't imagine working that schedule, though.

"Guzman" is a typical, know-it-all media blow-hard with opinions that are more ponderous than his mental capacity. Bottom line: this is the biggest no-brainer in decades and should have been done when Collins was killed.

Kudos to you, Mr. Feder, for breaking the story and getting the word out so well last week, and kudos on a great in-depth interview. It truly is a new world in radio, and I thought I'd never see the day that Johnny B. would me on WGN. Aunt Marcia maybe, but JOHNNY B.? Got to hand it to Tom Langmyer for finally getting Johnny B. on WGN. Although Tom was not visionary enough to consider me for the Cubs play by play job when it was open, he's a bright guy and likely has set up WGN for a true renaissance. Best of luck to Johnny and The Radio Home Of Millions.

The addition of JB will not move the needle on the real money demo of Adults 18-34. Radio is the media of choice for insurance agents, banks, and local car dealerships. WGN is not going to increase revenue with Jonny B--they just hope to maintain.

I grew up listening to WGN so I never really listened to Johnny B. much. What little I heard of him reminded me of the early Wally Phillips or a younger Bob Collins when he was doing those split afternoon-evening shifts. I'll give Brandmeier a shot, if for no other reason than to salute management for coming to its senses on AM drive. I'd sooner listen to dead air than Greg Jarrett. He lost me at Devon Avenue.

"Those who listened to Johnny in the '80s ARE the older folks," says Bob Y. EXACTLY. WGN will now be one of my car radio buttons and it never was before. Guzman talks about driving away the WGN traditionalists -- But Michael, they've already been driven away by Randy Michaels & Kevin Metheny (or died); Johnny B. needs to bring in new listeners. And forget Kent Voss, bring back bluesman/newsman Buzz Kilman ....

the great programming minds that took KMOX to mediocrity and replaced MJ Rose in NASCAR country seem to forget that johnny b and gary were not available by accident they carry baggage and perceptions from the heyday of FM glory and their 3 shares try to remember that Collins daily audience was larger than the cume ratings of dahl/meier and johnny b for a month you will never find a visionary at WGN or someone would have stood up to randy; Sycophants are not visionary

Fantastic that Brandmeier is returning to Chicago radio on WGN. (Missed any announcements last week. This article on it was the first I've seen.) Now then, if the WGN bosses are willing to let Brandmeier do his show without constant break-aways for news and traffic, then how about letting Garry Meier do the same in the afternoon? It never fails that once Garry gets going on a good topic, he has to put a halt to everything and let the traffic reporter break in and rattle off SomethingAboutaWholeLotOfTrafficHereOrThereOrSomewhereElse that you can't even understand because it goes by so fast. Also, no offense to the wonderful Tom Skilling, but I can see what the current weather is by looking out the window. 15 seconds of what the weather will be tomorrow and the next couple of days is enough. Looking forward to the two Meiers on WGN - Brand and Garry!

Rob - Couldn't wait to read your blog comments about the changes at 'gn. So glad to see Greg Jarrett go - he never "got" Chicago. Every mispronunciation represented a misunderstanding of Chicago. And for many of us, WGN is Chicago (in the same way that Roe Conn is Chicago). Also, GJ's arrogance is so not our town. The WGN greats were never arrogant - their humility was part of their appeal - that's a Chicago thing, and GJ never got that. Finally - here's a shout out to WGN management: lose the grating Mike M, so I don't have to turn off my radio at 9am. Bill Leff all night - priceless - worth staying up late! John Williams - never lose him. And love that we'll be listening to Steve B. on morning news - should be a great foil to Johnny B. Can't wait - great way to lead into a Chicago winter!

@ken, no one told Steve & Johnnie or you that WGN is a TALK station -- not music music music?

Wonderful news! Welcome back Johnny B - you've been missed.

I heard this guy Leff this morning for just a short while at 5:00. From every indication he has the warmth of Howard Miller, Steve and Johnnies' encyclopedic understanding of the way the world works and the microphonic magic, minus the nasal buzz, of Eddie Schwartz. It's going to be a win win win situation for Chicagoland -- that's for sure.
By OnTheEdgeOfMyChair (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:14 pm
I won't add much more to these comments other than to say that the volume of comments here is an indicator of buzz that WGN is already getting from Johnny's hiring and he hasn't even started yet. So, round 1 to WGN. For what it's worth, I'm right in the heart of the demo WGN is after and I will now hit my WGN preset in the am more frequently than ever before. We all just have to hope Johnny doesn't become the "company man" the way Garry Meier became once on WGN. Let's remember Garry defended the idoicy of Kevin Matheny on air. Johnny's wife is not his agent, so he's probably already better off than Garry.

Good riddance to Jarrett,he stunk bad. But "JohnnyB" ain't much better. Steve and Johnnie seemed like nice people but their time had truly come.
By MaryVee (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:41 pm
Hi Mr Feder Please get the low down on why Steve and Johnnie are leaving. If this is like we are getting replacements for them this is another big boon dogle like Kathy and Judy. While Spike left on his own he was rated 8 plus his replacement 2. Cutting down John Williams time and Nick Digilo's time another big boondogle. I used to be a 24/7/36 now only five programs.
By Anonymous (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:41 pm
..when will he refer to himself as the 'Mayor Mayonnaise" "Governor of Goo" or "Lord of Lebanese Lumber"? 6:30 maybe?
By kevhead99 (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:54 pm
Thanks for your excellent "scooping" about the changes to WGN. But SOMEBODY must have the inside skinny as to why Nick Digilio is the perpetual "bridesmaid" on the station roster, doing yeoman work filling in for, among others, S&J, only to see Bill Leff catch the bouquet. What's going on here, Rob?
By ChiTownGal (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 1:55 pm
Back in the day WLUP had the strongest and most creative line-up of talk radio in the country. So, WGN's hiring of Brandmeier (and Garry Meier before him), is the right move to make, especially after a number of years of bad decisions made by the previous management. Brandmeier is a seasoned pro who will bring WGN's morning show back to the leader that it once was under Wally Phillips and Bob Collins. I will now set my clock radio to wake up to WGN and wish the station nothing but success with the new changes that they are making. I also want to say that hiring Bill Leff is a good move. My only regret is that his shift is not one I would normally listen to. I have enjoyed Leff's fill-in work in drive-time.
By JazzQuipster (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 2:26 pm
What about Jimmy "Bud" Wiser? Why was Johnny B's old producer let go the minute Brandmeier gets in the door? Do tell.
By Clark G. (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 2:44 pm
It does appear that WGN is hiring the juvenile show biz "talent" of Brandmeier for millions of dollars to go after his proven demographic- drunken 18-34 year olds with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Just hearing this clown's voice doing his promos already is extremely annoying- can't stand him. Why doesn't he just go away permanantly and go back to LA where he belongs?

I heard JB's cameo during Garry Meier's show Friday afternoon, and immediately thought there is no way in heck this guy can calm down enough for the morning show. Maybe it was his shtick for the day, but it was quite unsettling. Then I had a chance to WATCH the same 15-minute exchange on the WGN website, and suddenly it all made sense, for whatever reason. JB is quick, happy, funny & harmless, and his repartee with Meier was classic. Still...JB will definitely need to tone down the ADHD thing at least a little bit, which a good producer/advisor can do. Anything will be an improvement over Jarrett. The BIG news, of course is that JB got Langmyer et al to dump traffic, which is absolutely amazing.

Isn't it time for Dr. Milt Rosenberg to ride off into the sunset to Miami Beach? Wouldn't it be GREAT if Dr. Milt was replaced by Nick Digilio like 10 pm to 2 am and let Bill Leff do the 2 am to 5:30 am shift?
By LenaWaybak (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 3:31 pm
At a time when the only morning drive entertainment is sports radio, I am grateful for another go 'round with Johnny B. I don't care if that means I'm now one of the new old ones -- we're NOT so wrapped up in the need for comfort. The loss of Greg Jarrett just doubles the pleasure. Radiohead nailed it. Every move here was an upgrade. A WGN transformation is required after being dragged through the mud and ashes lately, and the initial growth steps are necessary whether they prove to be long term or not.

A drunken Adult 18-34 would not know Jonny B if he sat on his lap. Perhaps 1 out of 25 A18-34 have heard of him. Oh please do tell the inside skinny on Nick D and S&J. And Jim Wiser. I love the buzz this has created among people who like AM radio..it is HUGE!
By Lydia (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 4:37 pm

Cool to hear Johnny again - now if they could just get rid of McConnel who is absoultely wrong for this city and station. He's a Cincinatti guy who wants to be Rush Limbaugh with his racist beliefs. It's funny how McConnel tries to change his personna to fit in with WGN and Chicago...super lame. Good luck Johnny B.

JB began every Friday show with "Only One More Day For Johnny". It would be cute if his first GN show started the same way.

I'm thrilled that Steve & Johnnie are gone and really like Bill Leff. I don't understand the treatment of Nick Digilio. They keep taking more time away from his weekend shows, like that terrible disaster this past Friday. I agree with the person that said retire Milt and give that time slot to Nick. Then we can have both Nick and Bill. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Howdy Doody would have done a better job than Jarrett. Who's going to carry the torch for Les Paul now? AND no more talk about guitars. Chicago hit the jackpot.

For years, the most intelligent and exciting host on WGN has been Nick DiGilio. The 16-year-old sk8er across the street loves him, my old auntie loves him, and-- somewhere between those two age extremes-- do we. For years and years and years, we've always wondered: when will he get more airtime? A regular, non-weekend-latenight show? Listen to his interviews-- his intense curiosity has made even lead-tongued interviewees open up. He's Mr. Chicago and a treasure. All I can say is: What The Hell?

Okay... Thank goodness Jarrett is finally gone!! We'll see how Brandmeier fits in. P-L-E-A-S-E get rid of McConnell, and bring Bill Leff to mornings to replace him. I think Bill Leff followed by JW is a great combination. Then, give S&J's overnight slot to the well-deserved NickD. Perfecto!
By faithful GN'r (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 10:09 pm
Good lord, no. The last thing Nick D needs is more time on the air. The man's a trainwreck who can barely fill the limited time he has, and even that requires half a dozen pieces of schtick just to make it. If WGN ever loses the Cubs or the Hawks, he'll be in trouble because he won't be able to kill 15-20 minutes every week playing "hightlights" from the games. I first started listening to time ten years ago and then stopped when I realized that, five years later, I was still listening to the exact same show. He loves to go on about how old he is; perhaps it's time he finally grew up.

WGN will never be the same without Wally. I liked being able to call in and find out what the weather would be in any city anywhere, and know that on my birthday I could call in and expect to see a certificate for Mama Luigi's or Bozo's Pizza in my mailbox. Wally was the best and there will never be another Wally. This is just too much change for me. I think I'll just read my AARP newsletter and pour myself a double geritol, watch some Lawrence Welk on WYIN and go to bed early.

'GN, you can't be serious. You used to be a friendly, reliable, newsworthy station. Now you think you need to rely on JB's worn out old schtick that already hasn't worked for 25+ years. Time to go to 560 WIND or 890 'LS.
By Former Johnny B fan (not verified) on 12/05/2011 at 10:55 pm
WIND was much better in the original German.

After almost 2 very long years, all may finally be right with the world! Welcome back JB! This is very exciting news and I am glad that morning radio may have a voice that actually feels like and knows Chicago once again. JB has done his time and knows the City inside and out and that means something. Too many out of towners just don’t cut it. The ‘GN job, while initially sounding a bit “stogy” for JB is well deserved and if, as Rob’s article says, he is allowed to go outside of the ridgid ‘GN box a little, could make for some interesting radio. It’s also good to know that he is at a station that will actually try to promote him and the show with some marketing unlike the genius’s at Emmis and the Loop who didn’t do any advertising on his second go around. I always felt that under the craziness demonstrated at the other stations was a man who could represent Chicago radio in his own, unique way that could add fun and laughs to your morning followed by the seriousness of news and interviews. This is exciting for Johnny and for Chicago! Best of luck and remind me of GN’s frequency again? BTW, how about a place for Kent?

I miss my show, my listeners and my callers. Like Margaret from Arlington Heights who asked: "Wally, is there a route to the Loop where we don't have to look at any Negroes?" I am spinning so fast in my grave you could slice meat.

It's amazing to me how many commenters assume that Johnny B will simply replicate his 1980s schtick rather than coming up with a new approach for the new century and new station. Don't you think talent includes the ability to adapt? It's also amazing how rampant ageism is on these boards. People sling stereotypes and slurs that would be beyond the pale if they were talking about race or gender. Try to open your small minds a little bit, OK?
By C (not verified) on 12/06/2011 at 11:36 am
I cannot recall ever listening to Jonathan so I guess I will be able to have an objective opinion of his 'fit' with my concept of WGN radio. I am one who appreciates the News/Weather/Traffic repeats each hour so if that goes away I will too. WLS is just one button away. If this guy is just another shock jock type clown? Sorry, I find that boring and offensive and won't waste my time on him.
By randyP (not verified) on 12/06/2011 at 11:40 am
Just to clarify my above statements, this comment section did not contain so much of the attitudes I deplore--but it was quite rampant on at least one major news site. Some people think they're being quite clever, but they aren't really thinking.
By C (not verified) on 12/06/2011 at 3:36 pm
As the saying goes, "this ain't your fathers WGN any longer." Just consider how Garry has adapted to the new 'GN model. I've added WGN to my radio. Glad to have Johnny back on the radio.

@WallyP...Too Funny!

Despite its recent financial history, the Tribune has money.  And money, equates to time.  That's what it will take.  Hiring Johnny makes perfect sense.  We've all aged together and he'll likely be our Wally or Bob.  Further, WGN has proven before that they can do very well outside the money demo.  Getting rid of Steve and Johnnie was long overdue and we'll see how Garry progresses.  And while the PPMs have changed the radio landscape forever, I would not be surprised to see a major resurgence at 720 AM. Go, Johnny, go!

I can't quite picture The Hyper Rooster on the Worldwide Geritol Network. They will have to shoot him up with elephant tranquilizers to fit in over there.
By Rod (not verified) on 12/09/2011 at 1:44 pm
Wow- this first show (at least the little bit that I could deal with) WAS worse than imagined! This guy is a terrible fit in WGN's tightly formatted program- there's ZERO time or room for rambling, silly bits. Creativity? Not here, not in the morning time $lot. Play the commercials, time for news, time for a weather, time for traffic! Gotta break for commercials. Opps, time for more commercials. This is definitely going to prove to be a big mistake for all involved- Brandmeier isn't going to be so happy that he sold out.
By R.Crumb (not verified) on 12/10/2011 at 8:18 pm
I think Brandmeier is simply too hyperkinetic for the structured mornings at 'GN. Something's gotta give. Then, consider the WGN Morning Man March--Wally, then Uncle Bobby, to Spike, over to Jarrett, and now Johnny B. What is the point? Darwin was ABSOLUTELY WRONG!
By Anonymous (not verified) on 12/11/2011 at 7:38 pm
Please send this guy packing. Horrible fit in the morning. I just can't listen to this hyper nut case. I used to listen to wgn most of the day but everyone is gone now. Love John Williams , Gary Meier perfect fit. WGN is going down the tubes if they keep this up.
