A high-heeled, skin-tight-pants-wearing Mary Williamson—host of the Inconvenience’s 2012 Fly Honey Show—walked out onto the Redmoon stage this past Friday and uttered a few words of introduction: “We’ve got a big, giant, fuck-off show for you tonight!”
None of us newbies knew what she meant, but it soon became clear that “fuck-off” was used in the best sense—an apt descriptor for a well-rounded evening of indie-rock sets, male and female burlesque dancing, Broadway renditions, a magic act, a dirty-minded poet and a few more surprises, most of which came from the sensual movements of the Fly Honey dancers. Throughout the evening, a bar doled out cans of PBR for a couple of bucks, which didn’t hurt matters, either.
The local arts organization packed 18 acts onto a modest yet chic catwalk stage in little more than two hours. Though the show highlights its singers and musical sets, the Fly Honeys own the night. They strut their stuff, sway their torsos and tease from up close and from a distance. You’d be wrong to assume that cabaret/burlesque-style dancing requires only sexual charisma. It does, but there’s also technique involved, and these dancers—many of them professionals—had the moves to prove it.
One of the real treats is the way the performers complement each other. Like a band of gypsies, they find the fun in their own spontaneity, and the energy carries over to the crowd, encouraging lots of hoots, hollers and whistles. A chandelier hangs from above, adding a vintage feel to the otherwise black-walled surroundings, while the Fly Honey Band supplements with a bit of jazz and funk, keeping things busy between sets. And unlike other shows, this one encourages performers to mingle with the audience when they’re not entertaining. Not everyone is a performer, but everyone feels like they’re part of the show.
Supercharged appearances from the Ye-Ye band, followed by the Honey Hair Whip tease that saw 40-plus girls drop top to expose glittery pasties, added the proverbial cherry on top.
I went on both Friday and Saturday nights, and both shows seemed distinctly different from one another, a testament to the show’s organization and appeal. The Fly Honey Show, which supports the Inconvenience Project’s upcoming events, including a block-party and a dance event in the fall, had all the makings of a top-notch cabaret: supremely fun, endlessly entertaining and uniquely inviting. An inconvenience this was not.
