Yes, that is Whit Stillman on Twitter
Whit Stillman on the set of Damsels in Distress
The man tweeting as @WhitStillman certainly seemed like he might be the director of Damsels in Distress: His tweets have thus far mostly been devoted to spreading the word about the film, and he inaugurated his feed in a typically waggish fashion: "Is the water cold in here?" Still, the uses of "u" and "gr8" had me wondering whether the account was the work of an(other) ironist. And in this interview with Austinist, Stillman suggested he was planning to stay off Twitter entirely in order to avoid being confused with Twitter imposters.
But I reached the director by e-mail this afternoon, and he clarified that he is, indeed, the man at the helm of the account. The Austinist interview was conducted the week before he decided to wade in, he explained. Now, not only is he on Twitter, but he's enjoying it: "It's helped me follow the whole Juicegate controversy in all its fascinating details." As for his use of words like "2nite": "I have been meaning to ask whether using txt abbreviations in tweets is bad form. I like concision & find it a fun game; as I was in Europe when sms took over -- years before it did in the States -- I became v used to that and grew to love it."
Here's my talk with Stillman from last month.
