Music Box to host a 70mm screening of Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master tomorrow night

Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master
We asked for it, and Paul Thomas Anderson delivered. The Music Box plans to host a surprise 70mm screening of The Master tomorrow night at 10pm. The theater (3733 N Southport Ave) is by all accounts the last public venue in Chicago capable of presenting the wide-gauge format, which is what Anderson used in shooting and the way he wants the film to be seen.
Although the Weinstein Company has no clear plans to give Chicago a 70mm print for The Master's general run (the movie opens locally September 21), our post alerted Anderson's team to the fact that the Music Box is still 70mm-ready. This will be the second surprise screening of the film, after one at the Aero in Santa Monica earlier this month. Tickets are $10 and should be available soon at musicboxtheatre.com; all proceeds will go to the Film Foundation, of which Anderson is a board member.
