Fall preview: Upcoming films
Here are five of the season’s most hotly anticipated movies.
Argo (Oct 12)
For his follow-up to The Town, Ben Affleck directs and stars in an action drama set during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979. Inspired by real events, the plot concerns a team of U.S. and Canadian operatives attempting to rescue a half-dozen escaped American diplomats by disguising them as filmmakers.
Cloud Atlas (Oct 26)
It took the combined directing efforts of Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix trilogy) to bring David Mitchell’s “unfilmable,” era-spanning 2004 novel to the screen. The all-star cast includes Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and—playing at least four characters—Tom Hanks.
Lincoln (Nov 9)
Daniel Day-Lewis is the spitting image of Honest Abe in Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited biopic.
Skyfall (Nov 9)
Daniel Craig steps back into the tux for this 23rd entry in the James Bond series. Directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty), the film pits 007 against a mysterious figure from M’s past, played by No Country for Old Men terrorizer Javier Bardem.
Life of Pi (Nov 21)
Yann Martel’s fantasy-adventure novel, about an Indian boy stranded at sea with a Bengal tiger, is now a 3-D movie from Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee.
