October 25

* 7pm Flight Dir. Robert Zemeckis. 2012. 138mins. USA. Zemeckis wings it back to live-action filmmaking with this ballsy, morally thorny quasi-thriller, starring Denzel Washington as a pilot who saves 96 out of 102 passengers in a miraculous crash-landing—then deals with the tough part: navigating the resultant course of bureaucratic and personal culpability. The movie offers the uncommon pleasure of not knowing what’s going to happen from scene to scene. Marred by one major failure of nerve, it’s still impressive, and a rare bird; it feels Lumet-ian in its texture and complexity.—Ben Kenigsberg
