Public Enemies cast of characters
Find out who played John Dillinger before Johnny Depp got the role.
The role Anna Sage
The infamous “woman in red” who ratted out Dillinger to the feds
Starring Branka Katic
Past portrayals Sage was turned into composite characters in 1945’s Dillinger; Anne Jeffreys’s “Helen Rogers” begins the movie as a box-office clerk, adding to the irony when she betrays Dillinger at the Biograph. Sage was finally pushed into the foreground in Lewis Teague’s out-of-print The Lady in Red (1979, written by John Sayles), but the Romanian madam was softened in early screen versions, in part to avoid mentioning that she operated a prostitution ring on North Halsted Street. In Mervyn LeRoy’s The FBI Story (1959), Sage (Jean Willes) reluctantly turns Dillinger in, sheepishly saying he was “more than just a regular business friend.” In Milius’s film, Cloris Leachman has just two scenes, but she at least gives Sage a Romanian accent.
