Saugatuck in pictures
A Saugatuck slideshow plus insider picks.
We came, we saw, we took pictures. Enjoy our postcard snapshots from the weekend that was. We also asked four locals to give us their insider tips for gay-friendly Saugatuck. Here is what they raved about:
“One thing I didn’t find out about until I lived here are the beautiful trails at the Saugatuck Dunes State Park. There are four different hiking trails, ranging from 2.5 to 5 miles long, and you come out of the woods and the dunes to a spectacular view of Lake Michigan. It’s my favorite place after Campit.” –Sally Howard, co-owner, Campit
“I love attending the Mason Street Warehouse summer series of Broadway favorites. Chicago is coming to town soon. I shop at Thomas Greene on Center Street in Downtown Douglas because I love their variety of colorful watches and gifts for the “hard to buy for person. I get ice cream at Kilwins in Saugatuck and enjoy hanging out at the pool at the The Dunes Resort.” –Jim Petzing, owner of Zing
“A few of my favorite things to do include the Saugatuck Farmers Market on Fridays, Ice cream at Earl's Farm Market in Glenn, and a visit to Gerstner Hardware in Glenn, where the ambiance of the 1900's including the original hardwood floors and tin ceiling and where customer service is still important. There's also a visit to At Last in Glenn, an eclectic look at fine art, antiques, and unique items for the home and garden.” –Ronda Hall, resident
“ One of the most popular restaurants in our area, primarily because of how great the food is, is called Every Day People Café in Douglas – straight owned but very gay friendly a big contributor to the community. On Friday’s it gets the nickname “Every Gay People” as it is a favorite place to go out to eat upon arrival in town. Their Gnocchi and Tenderloin are our favorites. For gourmet dining with corkage available, check out the gay owned Belvedere Inn, just north of Saugatuck. Food is great and we love being able to bring out own wine. For a “tavern” experience I recommend the What Not Inn at the corner of Blue Star & M-89. Steaks and burger baskets are good. The best is Dortha’s Homemade Coconut Cake! Another locals’ favorite is “Burger Night” at Spectators Bar & Grill in Saugatuck on Mondays. Cheap but great burgers, full bar and lots the community shows up for it. –Michael O’Connor, co-owner of Campit
