Check out our Oscar party roundup.
There isn’t much gay about this year’s 84th annual Academy Awards, except of course the viewership. Where will you be watching the Oscars on Sunday 26? We place our bets.
Academy Awards Viewing Party at Kit Kat (Kit Kat Lounge, 3700 N Halsted St, 5:30pm; free). Walk the purple carpet and be greeted by gold-and purple-painted Oscar statue models and strike a variety of poses at the feel-like-a-star photo shoot. The big show will play on all seven screens while guests enjoy half-price cocktails and free samples from Hpnotiq Harmonie.
Odds Kit Kat is always fun on a Sunday, so the fact that it aligns with the Oscars is an added bonus layer of glittery goodness. We say there’s a 5-1 chance that diva for the evening Sunny DeeLite looks better in her dress than any of the Best Actress noms.
On the Red Carpet (Park West, 322 W Armitage Ave, 6pm; $30–$125) The Center on Halsted’s annual hat tip to Tinsel Town goes all out starting with a red-carpet strut outside the theater and also includes a buffet dinner, silent auction valued at $25,000 and candy and popcorn in anticipation of the live telecast. Think you can read the minds of Academy voters? For $10 you can submit your own ballot for the Predict-the-Winner Contest. The person with the most correct picks splits the pot with the Center on Halsted. Sweet!
Odds While the party at the Siskel is still this city’s big bash, for the queer community we’re betting 3-2 this party is an affair to remember.
The Oscars Party (Crew Bar and Grill, 4804 N Broadway, 7pm; free) Sports bar Crew skips fashion and red carpet fuss in favor of a lower-key affair loaded with cheap drink specials like $6.50 Double Bloody Marys, $10 Miller Lite pitchers, $12.50 beergarita and mimosa pitchers and $15 Champagne bottles. Sofia Saffire plays Oscar trivia with the crowd, and a $25 Crew gift card is awarded to the person who correctly guesses the most winners.
Odds A loud, glitzy gala this surely isn’t, but if your TV is busted and you’re looking for a chill place to see Clooney in his monkey suit, there’s a 2-1 chance this party is for you.
Vital Nights: And the Oscar Goes To… (Hotel 71, 71 E Wacker Dr, 5:30pm; $40–$50) The Junior Networking Committee for the Vital Bridges Center on Chronic Care kicks off its bash with a viewing of the red-carpet procession (coupled with snarky commentary) and continues until the last award is called (so it could go all night). The event is sponsored in part by Svedka and Sprinkles, and you know what that means: booze and cupcakes!
Odds Our own Shopping & Style editor (and pop-culture junkie) Kevin Aeh is cohosting this one, so we’re a little biased. He promises the night will deliver an audience award for Best Dressed, kick-ass raffle prizes and drinking games galore. That tells us there’s a 3-1 chance you won’t remember the evening at all.
