The new Pride Parade route
Where to find booze, shade or a bathroom break.
Gay-owned 1. Hearty (3819 N Broadway, 773-244-9866) will serve an all-you-can-eat brunch until 1pm and will set up risers for parade viewing by the main dining room’s front windows. Viewers can purchase booze-infused, rainbow-colored Pride snow cones. The patio also will be open.
Liquor outlets abound along the new route. 2. GNS Market (4092 N Broadway, 773-248-8642) and 3. Azuza Liquor (4411 N Broadway, 773-769-1178) will be peddling booze at 11am, but we suspect the long queues will be at 4. Target (4466 N Broadway, 773-596-2376), where you can stock up on hooch (after 11) and sunscreen and get a caffeine jolt at the in-store S’bucks as early as 8am.
Corner joint 5. Michael’s Pizza (4091 N Broadway, 773-929-4149) will satiate hunger with takeaway treats like hot dogs, pizza slices, draft beer, soda and bottled water.
Gay-frequented Mexican joint 6. El Mariachi (3906 N Broadway, 773-549-2932) will open its bar, dining room, enclosed outdoor patio and coach house at 11am for paradegoers. A walk-up window serves street food to go.
The 7. parking lot in front of the now-defunct KFC at Buena and Broadway should offer plenty of elbow room on an otherwise tight strip, and we suspect one shirtless ’mo will be perched atop that bright green Gaia clothing-collection box.
Feeling queasy? 8. Portable restrooms will be placed at each intersection along the new route.
Thank heaven! Cool off with a Slurpee (spiked via the flask in your pocket, of course) at the 24-hour 9. 7-Eleven (4155 N Broadway, 773-348-6450).
Need shade? 10. Jewel (4355 N Sheridan Rd, 773-477-7151) has that tall metal fence between the sidewalk and its parking lot, but the upside is it has trees to shield the sun. Or, try snagging a spot at one of the covered bus shelters at Broadway and Cullom Ave. They’re tiny, but they’re better than nothing.
