Perhaps because there’s only one drug trip, Depp dials down his Fear and Loathing mannerisms to play a Thompsonesque boozehound in this engaging adaptation of what’s technically the gonzo scribe’s second novel (although it wasn’t published until years later). The Way
Dir. Emilio Estevez. 2010. PG-13. 115mins. Martin Sheen, Deborah Kara Unger, Yorick van Wageningen, James Nesbitt, Estevez.
Sheen brings a little Bartlet-worthy gravitas to this syrupy self-help drama, which casts him as a shell-shocked father traveling to France to retrieve the body of his deceased adult son (actual offspring Estevez, who wrote and directed). Available on VOD Thu 9; on DVD and Blu-ray Feb 21.
