Mindy Kaling | Interview outtakes
Mindy Kaling had just shot some exteriors on the back lot of her new series, The Mindy Project, when she spoke with me by phone about playing a character with the same profession as her recently deceased mom, what the gays should wear for Halloween, why The Office apparently couldn’t survive without her, and the following outtakes, which don't appear in our published interview.
Why name the character Mindy instead of, say, Cindy? Why do the actor-playing-a-version-of-herself approach?
That was [Fox chairman of entertainment] Kevin Reilly’s idea. I had named the character Meera ’cause it seemed like a close approximation to my name. I didn’t want to be too creative with it. I just thought something pretty simple like Meera would be good. But Kevin wanted to change it to Mindy ’cause he—you know, I don’t know exactly why he thought this, but he just thought it would make it much more immediate and familiar for people.
Your character’s obsession with romantic comedies mirrors your own. How’s that going for the real Mindy? How’s the romance going?
Usually people say no comment on their lives who are much more famous than me and have interesting social lives. It makes it seem like my life is much more sexy-interesting than it is, but because it ruins anything good that might be happening, I think I’m gonna not answer that question, if that’s all the same to you. [Laughs]
The Mindy Project premieres at 8:30pm tonight on Fox.
