Reaper: Season One

Margaret Lyons
DON’T FEAR THE… Rick Gonzalez, Bret Harrison and Tyler Labine are anything but grim on Reaper.

File Reaper under “another good thing ruined by romance.” The sass-filled fantasy series, about a 21-year-old man-child who finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil, had it all: fun sidekicks, a coherent mythology, a dapper Ray Wise as Satan. But Reaper squandered the bulk of its emotional credibility by insisting that our hero, the goofy but earnest Sam (Harrison), is in love with his coworker, the boring Andi (Peregrym). On episodes where that relationship takes a back seat, though, Reaper sports an addictive combination of zingers, a comic-book-style parallelism that aligns working for Lucifer with being a grown-up, and some truly charming acting. The DVD set includes some wisely deleted scenes and a handful of audio commentaries.
