Hull House Museum soup kitchen
KITCHEN AID Social activist Jane Addams believed that, in addition to good, hardy protests, we need some good, hearty comfort food and a safe space to eat, convene and visualize change. Addams’s Hull-House Coffee House and Public Kitchen operated in the 1890s, around the time this cooking class was photographed. In homage to Addams’s vision, the Hull House Museum (800 S Halsted St at Polk St) will reopen the soup kitchen on Tue 6, noon–1:30pm. This time around, the kitchen tackles modern-day issues: the current food shortage, genetically modified food and the relationship between poverty and obesity. Chef-in-residence Sam Kass will serve up some discussion along with free, heaping bowls of organic carrot-ginger-coconut soup and spring pea and mint soup. The soup’s on every Tuesday noon–1:30pm.
