What's up with that?

Q Did Fox Chicago meteorologist Amy Freeze change her last name to fit her occupation?
A “It does seem like a name that’s too good to be true for a meteorologist in Chicago,” replied the perpetually chipper weather woman when we phoned her at work. “But it is the name I was born with, which has led to a lot of jokes in the Freeze house: My dad is Mr. Freeze, and all my nieces call me Aunty Freeze.” Though Freeze married her husband, Gary Arbuckle—they met while he was playing Brigham Young University’s mascot, Cosmo the Cougar, and she was a BYU cheerleader—after she became a certified broadcast meteorologist, she chose to continue using her maiden name because she attributes the icy moniker to her big break into weather forecasting. “I was working as a news writer at a Portland, Oregon, TV station and the main meteorologist was going to be out for a stretch,” Freeze explains, “so they said, ‘Who can we get to do the weather?’ And they thought my name just sounded right. It was the opportunity of a lifetime.” Besides, she says, “if I was to change my name to fit my occupation, it would be Windy Breeze. I always thought that had a good weather ring to it.” Curious about something around town? E-mail us at outthere@timeoutchicago.com.
