Candidate cookies at Max and Benny's October 21, 2:30pm
Baking a difference As political battles rage in swing states, a slightly sweeter one is happening at a Jewish deli in Northbrook. Selling butter cookies that feature frosting likenesses of Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin, Max and Benny’s (461 Waukegan Rd, 847-272-9490) is keeping its own unofficial election tally. “So far, Obama is outselling McCain four to one,” says owner Ben Schlan. Max and Benny’s isn’t the only place conducting edible elections. Flourish Bakery (1138 W Bryn Mawr Ave, 773-271-2253) in Edgewater is hawking cookies shaped like donkeys and elephants, and 7-Eleven is offering Obama and McCain coffee cups, telling customers to “cast your vote with cream and sugar.” In all three venues, Obama is outpacing McCain by at least 20 percent. “People are very passionate about this election,” says Schlan. “These cookies are our way of making it a little lighter.” Said one Max and Benny’s customer, “I’m voting for Obama, but these Palin cookies are hysterical. I really just want to see what Republicans taste like.”
