Your perfect weekend

Friday, Apr 16

While in Mad Men withdrawal until the next season airs (oh, why can’t they skip the whole filming thing?), hit up “The Real Men and Women of Madison Avenue” (Columbia College Congress Building, 33 E Congress Pkwy; 312-369-6843; 10am–5pm, free). The exhibit, sponsored by nonprofit advertising organization the One Club, features 150 examples of historic print and TV commercials, from George Lois’s “I want my MTV!” campaign to the original Tony the Tiger ad (by Chicago ad man Leo Burnett). And, to borrow a Burnett-coined phrase, the display is a g-r-r-eat slice of popular culture.
Chicago’s Finest take on the Chicago Fire Department at Battle of the Badges (De La Salle Institute, Parmer Activity Center, 3455 S Wabash Ave; 312-747-5824; 7pm; $20, advance $15) boxing matches. Before the first round gets under way at 8pm, watch an opening ceremony roll out Chicago-style: a military color guard, the ol’ Irish bagpipes and a ten count and a moment of silence to remember fallen heroes from both departments.
