Cándido Tirado

Teatro Vista will bookend its 2011–2012 season with productions by its newest resident playwright, New York–based Cándido Tirado, the company says. The season will open in October with a production of Tirado's 2006 work Momma's Boyz, which the playwright is revamping and setting in Chicago; directed by Ricardo Gutierrez, Momma's Boyz will play Chicago Dramatists. It's followed by Luis Alfaro's Oedipus el Rey, a Chicano update of the Greek that received a National New Play Network rolling premiere at San Francisco's Magic Theatre, Pasadena's Boston Court and D.C.'s Woolly Mammoth; the director and venue remain TBA. Next April sees the world premiere of Tirado's Fish Men, a multiethnic ensemble piece about chess hustlers, presented as a coproduction between Teatro Vista and the Goodman Theatre and marking TV artistic director Eddie Torres's Goodman directing debut. Like the current El Nogalar, which closes this Sunday, Fish Men will take a subscription slot in both theaters' seasons. Tirado joins Kristoffer Diaz and Tanya Saracho as Teatro Vista resident playwrights.
