Jeanne Gang to design new facility for Writers' Theatre
Jeanne Gang's Studio Gang Architects has been hired to design a new home for Glencoe's Writers' Theatre, say Writers' artistic director Michael Halberstam and executive director Kate Lipuma. The Chicago-based Studio Gang is best known for Aqua, the undulating residential tower that recently joined Chicago's skyline (and which led TOC Art & Design editor Lauren Weinberg to name Gang one of our last year).
"It’s been a lot of years of thinking and putting consultants to work to figure out what’s best for us," Lipuma said in a phone call this afternoon. "We’ve determined that the size of our theaters isn’t going to be good for the organization 5, 10, 15 years from now. There’s just a cap on what we can bring in from ticket sales." The plan is to build on the site of Writers' current home in Glencoe's Women's Library Club, pictured above; Writers' will continue to host the Library Club's activities in its new facility.
The size of the forthcoming capital campaign is yet to be determined, Lipuma says, as it will be dependent on Gang's design. "It’s gonna be a little bigger, but a whole lot better in terms of amenities," Lipuma adds. "What most impresses me about Studio Gang is their approach to projects; it’s really about the client and what they’re looking for." Studio Gang isn't new to theater design, either; the firm previously designed a unique and well-received indoor-outdoor theater for Rockford's Rock Valley College.
