Victory Gardens adds Ameriville, Oedipus El Rey
Victory Gardens Theater has announced two additions and one subtraction from its 2011–2012 season that seem to show the company's new artistic director, Chay Yew, putting his stamp on the programming. The previously announced Theresa Rebeck play What We're Up Against has been pulled due to scheduling conflicts, the theater says. Taking its place in the January 27–February 26 slot is Ameriville, a hip-hop collage addressing the state of our union performed by the theatrical collective Universes. Yew directed and contributed to the development of the piece for its debut at the 2009 Humana Festival.
Filling the previously open summer slot, June 29–July 29, is Luis Alfaro's Oedipus El Rey, also to be directed by Yew. Teatro Vista had said it would produce the Chicago premiere of Alfaro's play as part of its season (though without a venue or dates), but Victory Gardens will take it on instead. Casting will be announced at a later date.
