Phylicia Rashad to direct Paul Oakley Stovall's Immediate Family
Phylicia Rashad has signed on to direct a new production of Paul Oakley Stovall's Immediate Family this summer at the Goodman Theatre.
Chicago native Stovall's family dramedy, set in Hyde Park, depicts a clan of squabbling siblings coming together for a wedding. It was previously produced at FringeNYC and in Los Angeles under the title As Much As You Can. This summer's run in the Goodman's Owen Theatre is a commercial endeavor produced in association with About Face Theatre, where Stovall is an artistic associate. He's also an artistic associate with Dog & Pony Theatre Company, and was recently seen onstage in Court Theatre's Invisible Man.
Rashad, best known for her television work including eight seasons as Cosby Show matriarch Clair Huxtable, has an extensive theatrical career as an actor and, more recently, director. She won the Tony Award for lead actress in a play in 2004 for A Raisin in the Sun. Her cast for Immediate Family includes Shane'sia Davis, J. Nicole Brooks, Patrick Sarb, Phillip James Brannon, Kamal Angelo Bolden and Cynda Williams. Immediate Family will run June 2–July 8; tickets go on sale April 23 via the Goodman box office.
