Art Institute, Chicago Shakes bring Seurat to life Sunday
The Art Institute is the longtime home of Georges Seurat's famed painting A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884, the inspiration for Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize–winning 1984 musical Sunday in the Park with George, which is being revived at Chicago Shakes September 26–November 4. This Sunday, September 16, the museum will have on display at the top of its Grand Staircase a full-sized replica of Seurat's painting, minus a number of key figures.
The missing subjects are those represented as characters in the first act of Sunday in the Park, which depicts Seurat's creation of the painting; at 11am, the show's cast members will show up in costume to take their places in the painting and perform the musical's Act I closer, "Sunday," before making their way outside for a photo op with the lions, then hopping a trolley to Navy Pier. The "faux" Seurat will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the theater's Team Shakespeare education initiative.
