Motown the Musical preview at Hard Rock Café
Motown mogul Berry Gordy brought a sneak peek of Motown the Musical to Chicago's Hard Rock Café yesterday morning. The new tuner, which uses songs from the Motown records catalog made famous by the likes of Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and the Jackson 5 and a book by Gordy himself, based on his memoir To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, opened on Broadway last spring and is scheduled to kick off its first national tour here in April.
At the Hard Rock event for press and group bookers, Gordy and fellow producers Kevin McCollum and Doug Morris offered a pitch for the show that included performances by its original Broadway leads, Brandon Victor Dixon and Tony nominee Valisia LeKae. Casting for the tour is yet to be completed; an open call was held on Saturday at the Oriental Theatre.
