American Theater Company
Hired in 2007, artistic director P.J. Paparelli revamped the programming at this 25-year-old North Side institution so sweepingly that most of the long-standing ensemble packed up and left the company (they’ve reformed under their original name, American Blues Theater). HR disputes aside, Paparelli’s exhilarating artistic choices have been bracing, including the Chicago premiere of Stephen Karam’s Speech and Debate; a race-switching co-production with Congo Square Theatre Company of Topdog/Underdog and True West; and the world premiere of Kristoffer Diaz's hip-hop yarn Welcome to Arroyo's.
