Cirque Du Soleil needed to deliver big-time with this year's OVO, debuting at the United Center last night. And deliver it did. Whatever damage the Cirque's rep might have suffered from the not-so-well-loved Banana Shpeel from 2010 (though I never saw it) is forgiven, repaired and in the past—or at least that's the case in my often easily entertained mind after last night's OVO. Delivering an impressive slew of acrobatic acts from Cirque's international cast of all-star big-top performers within an imaginative, fantastic world seen from a bug's eye view, OVO seemed carefully crafted to not only bring us dazzling performances of acts we'd never thought possible but to place us in a world where the improbable becomes possible. If the circus is where even stressed-out grown-ups can find moments of childlike amazement, then OVO succeeds. It works. I fell for it hook like and sinker. While the Champagne and frozen cheesecake I downed during intermission (don't judge) certainly helped me enjoy the two-hour performance, I think I could have gotten a buzz naturally from memorable acts such as the Ants (juggling kiwis) and the Slackwire performer—both of which, I swear, were benefitting from some kind of magic. The skits and clowning may offer less wow-factor than a dozen bugmen bouncing up a wall horizontally, but I never got bored with those interludes—and they tied the various acrobatic acts together. The music, too, which ranged from Left Bank (Gypsy) dub to Stereolabish jams, faux Afrobeat and Radioheadish plucked Satie piano figures, was stellar and executed by a (seemingly) mostly live band. I didn't go into OVO thinking about writing a review—I'm as interested as you are in what TOC's Kris Vire has to say about the show (Update: here's his review)—but I can say with confidence that I found it a good night out if you can afford it.

What am I missing? Though I'm always amazed at some of the individual acts (power track/wall walk, slackrope, etc.), I couldn't help but notice the dated, cheap filler. Worse, though, is the bit where an insect is getting high sniffing insect repellant. What message are we sending to the kids here? Not only was this obviously meant for a cheap laugh, I didn't hear anybody laughing. I love Cirque du Soleil though I wouldn't go so far as to say that they are back at the top of their game yet.
