Lyric Opera, Second City collaborate for The Second City Guide to the Opera
The Second City and the Lyric Opera are collaborating on a one-night comedy and opera mash-up, the two institutions announced today in a press conference at Second City. The Second City Guide to the Opera will play the Civic Opera House Saturday, January 5, Lyric general director Anthony Freud and Second City VP Kelly Leonard said.
Freud said the collaboration was the brainchild of famed soprano and Lyric creative consultant Renée Fleming, who will have a featured role in the show penned by Second City e.t.c. musical director Jesse Case, Kate James and Tim Sniffen. A "major comedy star" yet to be announced will also be included in the proceedings, Freud said.
The Lyric also announced Popcorn & Pasquale, a family-friendly condensed performance of Don Pasquale on December 2. The event is intended to serve as an introduction to opera for kids ages 5–12, with actor Ross Lehman serving as guide. Both events are part of the Lyric's new Lyric Unlimited community-engagement initiative, announced last week; tickets are available to Lyric subscribers today, and go on sale to the general public August 1 (The Second City Guide to the Opera $20–$95; Popcorn & Pasquale $20–$40 for adults, $10–$20 for kids).
