Pitchfork Festival 2011, Sunday | Recap

Wow. That was smoking. No, not just the skin on the back of our necks, which turned to chicharrones under a brutal Tatooine sun. Temperatures inched towards the triple digits, as the sere infields of Union Park's baseball diamonds were kicked up into a faint tan cloud.

As near the site was to boiling point, there was little uproar for the festival's most anticipated set, Odd Future. The worst thing that could have happened to the controversy-seeking act was a shrug. A riot could have cemented it's legend. I prefer the ambivalence that sunk in, hinting that the goons' moment in the spotlight is nearly over.

No, the controversy came from Ariel Pink. His get-pissed-at-the-drummer-and-go-off-and-smoke-before-quitting-the-set act is become routine, if not practiced.

Overall, day three blew away the first two. More talent, more energy, more fans. And metal. Solid sets came every hour, ending with a wonderful run of Superchunk, Deerhunter, Cut Copy and TV on the Radio on the main stages.
