Wild Flag's distinctive combination of frisky, streamlined pop mixed with abrasive guitar wildness is at its most intoxicating in a live setting. The sun shone during the supergroup's set, livening up an audience who were keen to clap along with some of the band's more familiar melodies. Taking turns at the mic, indie titans Carrie Brownstein and Mary Timony's guitar grooves brought a vibrant edge to tracks like "Glass Tambourine" and "Romance." The post-punk dream team injected hard-hitting dynamic range to songs that sound compressed on record, forcing them to bust their seams with unrestrained energy.
Girl gang harmonies, showmanship, swagger and psychedelic guitar interplay made for an electric mix. All members were on top form. Powerhouse drummer Janet Weiss created an avalanche of percussion behind her kit. Keyboardist Rebecca Cole bopped and beamed behind the keys, while Timony and Brownstein kicked up a storm of catchy riffs at the front of the stage. An extended version of "Racehorse" was particularly electrifying, and ended with a triumphant Brownstein holding her turquoise SG high above her head as the chaotic feedback roared across the crowd.
It's okay to be a show-off.
