The weeks-old Logan Square record store Saki yesterday played host to an in-store performance from Chicago experimental-rockers Califone. With gear overflowing from the location's tiny stage, the band turned in a short performance that focused mainly on material from their most recent release, 2009's All My Friends Are Funeral Singers. The group was in very good spirits, playfully bantering with the audience between songs, the highlight of which was guitarist Jim Becker's account of almost being struck by lightning the night prior. Califone's rootsy, percussive brand of rock was the perfect fit for space, filling the room and momentarily distracting attendees from the sweltering heat outside. If you missed out, fear not, Califone will be playing again today at 7:00 as part of Taste of Randolph Street.
