Minnesota's Low seemed to be carrying an ice age's worth of emotional baggage to the stage when I first saw them, er, a very long time ago. In the ensuing decades, the band has carried on with a slow and beautiful approach to rock that's extremely hard to pull off. Glenn Hansard, on the other hand, has been a rock star in Ireland for a long time, and a movie star in the States more recently. His talent is bringing those heightened emotional moments to the fore in dramatic tunes that never lose their human element. Both acts play with the scale of emotion within traditional rock dynamics but come out sounding like no one else. With a lovely and agreeable summer night to play with, Chicagoans came out of the woodwork for the gig. Lucky bastards.
