North Coast Music Festival 2011, Sunday: Little Dragon
Little Dragon could be the poster band that embodies what North Coast is all about. Danceable without being house, indie without a wall of guitars, they jam without that contrived Phish-iness. Ok, so magnetic singer Yukimi Nagano doesn't rap, but the band has toured with De La Soul, so it's in there somewhere.
These guys are instrumentalists who came up going to deep house nights. Nagano looked like a Japanese gypsy, twirling around onstage with a tambourine as her band casually stretched out versions of “My Step,” ” Looking Glass” and the title track from this year's Ritual Union.
Hypnotic and psychedelic, some moments dragged on longer than necessary given their one-hour set time. But, given the breeziness of the day, Little Dragon's slow-burning meditations suited the mood of this lazy Sunday just right.
