Yo-Yo Ma and Renée Fleming performed this afternoon in the rotunda of the Thompson Center, a.k.a. the State of Illinois building, by the DMV and M Burger. The world famous soprano and cellist were helping promote the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Citizen Musician initiative. It was our second favorite local public appearance by Ma, just behind that time he rolled around on the floor of a Harris Theater bathroom with a wombat.
Governor Quinn was on hand to MC the special collaboration between the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where Ma serves as a creative consultant, and the Lyric Opera, where Fleming does the same, the first creative consultant in the company's history.
Ma and Fleming performed Rachmaninoff and “America the Beautiful" with the assitance of area high school students.
