Afrojack at Spring Awakening Music Festival | Review and photos
By the time Afrojack hit the stage around ten, the crowd was in full blown glow-mode. Girls in tutus spun glowing hoola hoops, guys wore flashing grills in their teeth, kids waved glowing fingertips in front of their friends’ eyeballs. The size of the crowd grew as the other stages were done for the night. People were still buzzing about Saturday night’s headliner, Skrillex, particularly how his green laser-light show conspired with a sudden downpour to create an eerie stadium-wide mist. A looping piano part and a three-minute countdown preceded Afrojack hitting the stage.
The Dutch DJ and producer is a global hit maker, and he wove those hits, including Beyonce’s “Run This World (Girls),” Pitbull's “Give Me Everything” and “Take Over Control” into his 90 minute set. The crowd, all together, was a sight to behold. The sea of people rippled as thousands pogoed and fist pumped. Groups of guys and girls, including a dude wearing a space helmet, stood on top of trash cans. Somebody set off a smoke bomb, temporarily clearing a portion of the crowd.
Afrojack showed why he has become such a pop juggernaut, mixing catchy melodies with deep, elastic beats. He worked in P Diddy’s “I’m Coming Home” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” before launching into his David Guetta collaboration “Louder Than Words.” As the day wrapped up, thousands continued to dance furiously. The once seemingly impossible—a weekend-long rave in Soldier Field—had become reality. A freakish, beautiful reality.
