Dev at Lollapalooza 2012 | Photos and music review

"Let me hear you make some motherfucking noise," screamed Dev to a mobbed BMI stage, exhorting a crowd more than happy to oblige. It wasn't the last time she used that word, "motherfucking," during her short but punchy turn at the mic, and the audience weren't the only motherfuckers. She was, too, at one point at least. Dev's all about equal opportunity, tapping into a pop current that's as close to the surface as you can get.
The ck one color ambassador worked the stage in a flimsy jean dress barely hanging off her waist, sporting sharp blonde curls in a fiery burst. Empowered, perhaps, by her success in that pocket of the fashion world, she owned her slim time slot, aided only by a DJ and backup singer.
The 23-year-old follows in the mold of previous Lolla guests Lady Gaga and Kesha, though more closely resembles the latter, dabbling in rap when the mood fits. The bar's set at a level that's an easy hurdle when you're rocking it for kids wearing pink YOLO caps. Still, those who weren't wearing caps were singing along with every word, pumping their fists to emphasize every lyric. Eventually Dev arrived at her hit, "In the Dark" before imploring us once again. "Lollapalooza: Make some mothefucking noise!" Hundreds of glitter-encrusted teens and twenty-somethings responded in kind, because after all, #YOLO.
It's okay to be a show-off.
