Another EDM newbie, 20-year-old North Carolina DJ and producer Porter Robinson took more of a singular approach to his Lolla debut than did fellow DJ young gun Madeon. Focusing on unabashed rave-y electro, Robinson has dedicated his output to what he calls complextro: dirty electro house with an abundance of choppy synths, 8-bit chirps and, well, complex bass lines.
With the heat peaking, the lights flashing and the crowd going full tilt, his timing and vibe were rather perfect. It was easily the hardest set of the day up until that point. While his signature bass bombast and distorted synths were a constant, the sound was applied to an array of fellow hit makers, including remixes of Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Stronger, Faster" and Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."
Like Madeon, he's a total newcomer, cashing in on a specific, trendy sound, but in Robinson's case, his ability to focus and tweak it into something clearly his own let me know who he is as an artist. And that's refreshing.
