The Growlers at Lollapalooza 2012 | Photos and music review
Kicking things off at the Redbull Soundstage, SoCal psychedelic surf act the Growlers—a band I really love—were as blazing as the sun shining down upon us. There is nothing to not like about these guys: They have all the swagger, style and chops to pull off an opening slot at a behemoth fest, drawing in a swelling multitude of neon kids and Sabbath fans alike.
Highlights came in the form of singer Brooks Nielsen's banter, ranging from comments on the number of hairy dude breasts in the audience to teeny jabs like "This is a new song, but I think all of our songs are new to you guys," to astute observations like "This park looks like the set of American Gladiators." Their live show is very similar to that of the Black Lips—there are just enough hula dance moves and witty quips to keep things interesting, without distracting from the very solid lineup of beachy jams. An impressive opening, indeed.

It's okay to be a show-off.
