On Sunday at the Wavefront fest, the music finally started around 3pm after a storm delay. On the South Stage, a DJ got the crowd jumping with a Daft Punk sample, followed by a dub-step treatment of the Requiem For a Dream theme (aka some people’s definition of hell). The bombastic mix got the crowd moving despite the punishing heat. Afterwards, Chris Lake served up a set of trancey techno.
Benoit and Sergio, a duo who split their time between D.C. and Berlin, took over at 5pm. They hunched over their matching laptops to dish out deep house while beach balls bounced around the crowd. Sergio sang, stepped in front of their setup to play air guitar, and took photos of the crowd with his phone. The crowd started grooving proper. “Hey guys, thanks for coming out,” Sergio said, before they launched into a song about not having ice cream. An alarming glitter shortage was averted when a woman made her way through the crowd doling out glitter gel. A young lady with Marilyn Monroe and Edgar Allen Poe’s faces tattooed on her legs briefly danced on stage before being shooed away by security. Benoit and Sergio kept the chill vibe rolling as they covered for the next scheduled DJ, who was late.
Guy Gerber, an Israeli DJ, had the next set on North Stage. He used synthesizers to create techno beats before adding washes of ambient noise. As the sun began to set, sound bleed became more of an issue for those not directly in front of either main stage. Meanwhile, on the South Stage, an inflatable Shamu and a tin-foil World Cup rose above the crowd as Sweden’s Eric Prydz laid down a fun house mix. Due to an aversion to flying, the DJ and producer has only recently started doing shows outside Europe. The crowd at the South Stage was noticeably rowdier all day. Despite the sometimes intense heat, people were into it. “This shit’s the shit,” remarked one man to his friend in appreciation. The beach stayed hot even after the sun slipped behind a line of highrise apartments near dusk.
It's okay to be a show-off.
