Everyone knows the stereotype of a metal fanatic: headbanging, moshing and screaming, with a fuck-the-world attitude to boot. The fifth annual Mayhem Fest did nothing if not promote that label, but the audience—which was well into the five digits—seemed to say, well, fuck the stereotype.

This Saturday, hard rockers and metalists of all sorts took over the First Midwest Bank Amphitheater in Tinley Park, banging out all the music that could possibly fit into a ten-hour time frame. And from Mayhem's perspective, that meant a lot of metal: 15 bands played three stages, ensuring that audiences never went without music for longer than absolutely necessary.

Performers included the Dayton, Ohio-based Devil Wears Prada, a five-piecer who was named 2009's Band of the Year by the Alternative Press and whose two most recent albums topped the Indie charts. The self-proclaimed "American metalists" are recent Chicago transplants (we've never been so proud), and they certainly seemed right at home at Saturday's performance.

Mayhem Fest also featured metal megacelebrities like Anthrax, Motörhead, As I Lay Dying and Slayer. Slipknot closed out the evening, clad in their trademark masks and uniforms. Slipknot's had a rough time getting back on the horse since the death of bass player Paul Gray in 2010—but as this Saturday proved, the Iowans are carrying on with it. At heart they're the same band that created four platinum albums, was nominated for seven Grammys, and played alongside Iron Maiden and Metallica at various metal fests around the world.
