The Windy City was last graced with the presence of carefree surf rock duo Best Coast at last year's blowout 20th anniversary Lollapalooza, which featured megastars like Coldplay, Eminem and the Foo Fighters. This time around, Best Coast wasn't surrounded by quite the same company—but maybe it's better that way, because they got a much-deserved chance to shine.
Best Coast, which is composed of Californians Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, is still a relatively new operation: The band began releasing 7" singles in 2009. But a mere year later, they had caught the attention of not one, but two major record labels, and they released their debut album Crazy for You pretty much overnight. Now they have their sophomore album, The Only Place, on the market, and it's charted in both the US and the UK. They've also toured with a little band called The Decemberists, and played the main stage at the Metallica-run Orion Music + More festival in June.
Perhaps what's most appealing about Best Coast is their lightheartedness. The biography section of the band's website reads simply, "Inspired by life and love and everything else." That's it. And sometimes, in the midst of the big bad world out there, it's comforting to chill out and let some lazy, tender, blithe tuneage rock you. Apparently the people that turned up to see Best Coast at the Vic this Friday night felt the same.
It's okay to be a show-off.
