Skrillex after-parties at the Mid with Felix Da Housecat + Dillion Francis + Skrillex | Party report + photos

The Mid was hit by an electronic dance firestorm Friday, November 11, as the Skrillex mothership after-party landed there post–Congress Theater rave. The lineup was stacked with house slinger Felix da Housecat as well as up-and-comers and moombahton proponents Alvin Risk and Dillon Francis on the marquee. "Expect Surprises," the flyer stated at the end of the listed lineup, and that was no mere tease. 

Chicago native Felix da Housecat hit the decks at midnight just as the crowds began to pour in. Known for spinning hard house and electroclash in the clubs, he seemed to get the quickly growing crowd moving by incorporating synth-pop into his already diverse mix of music. Da Housecat helped jump-start the second wave of house music in the early 2000s and electro in the clubs, and he proved he's still a force to be reckoned with. 

Alvin Risk hopped on stage in a brown and gold argyle sweater just after 1:30am. But his preppy demeanor contrasted with the adrenaline-raising tunes he soon unleashed on the crowd. He got into it instantly, sampling songs from his latest EP "Two Strokes Raw." The EP, which is entirely moombahton—the latest genre to emerge from the electronic dance music scene—highlights the creativity that EDM producers have today. Moombahton, a fusion of Dutch house and reggaeton, was obviously a crowd pleaser. 

Twenty minutes into Alvin Risk's set, the man of the hour, Dillon Francis, appeared on stage, adorned with an American flag T-shirt. Francis has become the unofficial face of moombahton in the United States, and he lived up to his rep Friday night. The two tag-teamed the sound system dropping nothing but massive tracks that incorporated Francis's dubstep background with his new weapon of choice, moombahton. 

It was soon after the duo that the "expected surprises" joined the duo on stage. First the long black hair of Skrillex popped out from the crowd of fans dancing behind stage. In typical form with his hair hanging down in his face, he dropped "Equinox," his latest dubstep achievement, which has blown up in no small part thanks to a video released this summer

12th Planet, another major dubstepper, joined Skrillex on stage around 3am. The two are both known for bridging dubstep to hip-hop, and their show incorporated EDM in multiple forms, a refreshing twist on typical genre-bound electronic performances. Showgoers, too, got an eclectic version of EDM, which is only a taste of what's to come, in our book.
