Let's think about the original Northern Soul scene for a moment: A dance culture phenom that took root in casino dance halls in bleak, grey parts of the U.K. where the inspired and inspiring sounds of America's soulful dance music of the sixties and beyond flourished well into the seventies. Not exactly hipster and hip-yuppie colonized Logan Square but not so much unlike it in terms of weather and the need to uplifting, entertaining dance sounds to aid survival through the cold slog of Midwest winter. While we've had a gentle intro to the bitterest season, there's always a need for a good, proper, soul and boogie-infused dance party on New Year's Eve. The Empty Bottle presents folks complied with a Windy City Soul Club rager at the LSA. The WCSC brought its stacks of rare wax on 45 to get our feet a-shuffling appropriately. TOC was on hand to shoot the whole business. Despite some slight hiccups–a mandatory coat check slowed entry for many of the dance masses—it seems to have gone quite well.
