If you didn't know this already, raving is colorful business, and the first day of Soldier Field festival party Spring Awakening was a particularly neon-infused one. Crowds flocked to the grounds early, sporting all manner of glow-in-the-day garb from sweatbands to sunglasses to fishnets to shirt tops and short bottoms.
But if neon was the base coat, there was a lot more to the color mix than that. A lot of girls went the flower power route, looking like young Janis Joplins, if Joplin had been a cast member on Saved By the Bell. The '90s are back in a big way, but in a strange sort of hippie-preppie pastiche, attaching itself to evertyhing from extreme rave to typical college threads. Topsiders, Ray-Bans, khakis and tank tops ruled for guys, while bikini tops, suspenders, high-waisted shorts and t-strap sandals dominated the girls' wardrobe. Retro basketball jerseys are still a thing, and shirts boasting "Keep Calm and Dubstep On," "Sex, Drugs and Dubstep" and "Party With Sluts" must have been on sale because there were at least a dozen of each.
There were less furry boots than expected but the rave-style was also still ever present. Pacifiers, beads, fishnets, furry backpacks and dialated pupils could be seen bouncing from stage to stage, with the odd green man, Waldo or guy wearing a rubber horse head following not too far behind.
It's okay to be a show-off.
