After a record-setting night of rain in Chicago, the streets drained themselves of standing water in time to make way for this year's Wicker Park Festival. As usual, the organizers presented a diverse array of artists, spread out between three stages.

On the south stage, curated by Silver Wrapper, Saturday's line-up was dominated by dubstep and electronic acts. El Ten Eleven took the stage late in the evening, eschewing their usual post-rock tendencies in favor of arrangements that were more in line with the stage's dance-oriented offerings. Taking a slight dig at his contemporaries, guitarist Kristian Dunn made a point of announcing midway through the set, "Everything you're hearing is being played live." Armed with a double neck guitar, looping pedals and drums, the duo wound its way through a performance that provided a more organic take on the beat and hook driven genre. For most of the revelers in attendance, it was just more dance music.

Back north, under the neon lights of the Double Door, indie-rock supergroup Wild Flag capped off the evening with its second Chicago appearance in as many days. Leading the charge was bona-fide rock star (and writer, and comedian, etc.) Carrie Brownstein, who shredded an SG and air-kicked throughout the entire performance. Ranging within their set from the bouncy, psych pop of "Glass Tambourine" and "Romance" to the unbridled, distorted euphoria of "Racehorse," the ladies of Wild Flag ably demonstrated they can do more than just play loud as they pulled from a string of singles and a (still) unreleased debut record. The night ended with a pair of covers, the first a spot-on rendition of the Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden." After flubbing their first attempt at Patti Smith's "Ask the Angels," Brownstein prefaced their second try with the words "There's nothing perfect about rock music." Maybe Wild Flag's brand of punk rock isn't perfect, but it felt pretty damn close to it on Saturday night.

While the writer above may have though that El Ten Eleven's set was "just more dance music," I completely disagree. I'd never heard of them before. My friends and I wanted some dubstep, something to dance foolishly to. They came on the stage and we were pissed. Then... they started playing the best damn techno/dubstep/whateverthefrickyougetthepoint and totally got the crowd into it. Just two dudes, live instrument and looping. So much more entertainging than someone pressing play on their macbook. They dominated Saturday without even needing lyrics. Wild Flag was decent, at BEST, El Ten Eleven was what did it for me as the most memorable. When they played Paranoid Android I almost creamed my pants.
